I think I like Harry Potter so much for the same reason, Jefie HP7 in italian is officially going to come out on January 5th, so in about 160 days.

Oh no! It's really too bad you have to wait such a long time I heard the French version is coming out at the end of October... well, at least you know it's worth the wait!

I should be able to read the first two books before the third one comes out - by the way, is the GATB thread a safe place to go if I haven't read the second book or should I just wait?

I've only read the first book and I haven't read it yet because I think there is a lot from the second. I may have been spoiled a little, so I think you should stay away from it until you've read the second.

Yeh, i'd avoid it for now Jefie... even if Sage and i have of late just been talking about how clever and awesome Libba's blogs are, hehe!
It stinks that the translated versions of HP can't come out at the exact same time as the English versions - and heck, it's the same with international releases of the films. They spend so much time in print on the former and post-production on the latter, that you reckon they could use the time to get everything to coincide and be released all at once but NO! I don't get it, i truly don't!

It seems like they want to do a very accurate translation because Jo's works deserve an very good translation ..obviously I agree.. It seems a long time but I'm going to re-read other HP books during the next months. I think I'll read A Great and Terrible Beauty, it sounds like a good book, and you all say good things of it.

Good on ya Lu! The conversion is spreading, and i have sage and LG/Lostgirl to thank for my share of the bargain! Oh - a question that is somewhat on-topic: has anyone purchsed a copy of the audio of Deathly Hallows? I meant to do so on the day of the book's release and i keep forgetting. I have PS/SS read by Stephen Fry so i thought it only fair to book-end it nicely.

May i just say:
HAPPY 27TH BIRTHDAY HARRY! ('born' in 1980)
HAPPY 42ND BIRTHDAY JO ROWLING!
Two of the most important people of this year celebrate their special days on 31st July, so best wishes to them both, and countless thanks!

It's weird to think that Harry is older than me. I wonder why she didn't make it so that he was 11 when the book was published in 97? PS - It's also my mom's birthday, but she doesn't fully appreciate that she shares it with Harry Potter.

I think in Jo's mind, Harry was 11 - or 10 turning 11 - when she began writing the books, which was around 1990/91. She always said he came into her head "fully formed" so i assume that meant age aswell!

I remember I've heard that once before, but I still think it's weird that Harry is older than me because I read the first HP book when I was 16.

Yeah, I was 18 when I started, so I always thought he was younger than me, but really he's 3 years older.

Yes - it's very odd to suddenly see the characters as being that age - and not only that, but to imagine each novel as being in a set year, as oppossed to just the one in which we read them. I mean, i'm sure to view them in such a light is entirely optional, because apart from the occasional reference to a 'Gameboy' and whatnot from Dudley, context really doesn't matter so much, but to think - Harry's first year of school was 1991 - i was 5, and Beauty and the Beast was out in cinemas! So odd.... and the final year was 97 - outside of Hogwarts, the Spice Girls were at large and Princess Di was killed! Amazing!
