Ooooh! Funkyness! I'm jealous!!! Ok now people - i saw Harry 5 last night and here be my review. Warning though: SOME SPOILERS AHEAD:
T'was good but as with all films it had little things ommitted or rushed over that really irked me (they left out Lily entirely from Snape's memory - that's a NO!!!!!! And Harry didn't have his cracking moment at the end, which i always wanted to see Dan try to do, coz it really moves me in the book) Pacing was also an issue for me, coz as this is the longest book you'd expect a long film and yet it's the second shortest i think. I understand the motive behind keeping things tight but so many things could have been added back in and it would have taken barely any time at all. Sheesh! When will they learn?! The acting on the part of the trio has really improved (i didn't want to slap Rupert or mock Emma, which is a nice change) and Dan did some good angry moments; his final internal war against Voldy's possession was done really well i think. And it was great to have Gary Oldman back in the mix, aswell as David Thewlis, even if Lupin never gets the attention i feel he deserves (i LOVE my Lupin). Evanna Lynch as Luna was utterly perfect and Bonnie Wright as Ginny had these subtle little moments that really thrilled me; i can't wait to see her in film 6. Imedla Staunton was a good Umbridge, though i loathe the character so much that i never want to speak of her longer than is absolutely necessary. Overall, the film's tone was much more serious and that's as it should be; from gasps or whisperings at some points you could tell that somewhat ignorant members of the audience were FINALLY awakening to the fact that this is no longer kiddie's stuff. And about time too! This is probably equal with GOF as being my second fav film, after POA.

I've read the chapter where Harry gets the invisibility cloak for Christmas, this morning. I have a lack of memory...and...I can't remeber why I've always been so sure that Dumbledore had given it to Harry I was wandering on Jo website and I read that in F.A.Q. section: What are the properties of Draco’s wand? Can we assume that its wood is hawthorn, as per the chart on your site? Interestingly (to me) I decided that Draco had a hawthorn wand independently of the chart. So yes, it is hawthorn, and by a bizarre coincidence I assigned him that wood, as I assigned Harry holly, without realising it was the ‘right’ one. Spooky... but for various reasons hawthorn seems to suit Draco as holly suits Harry. I thought it was interesting, I didn't know anything about Malfoy's wand..

I saw Order of the Phoenix last night, and I agree with many things you said, Neh. I liked it a lot - it's my second favorite behind Prisoner of Azkaban.
They left a lot of things out, but I guess that's to be expected since book five is the longest book. But still - HP fans will sit for longer than 2 hours and 18 minutes.
The acting was a lot better. Daniel didn't have any moments that made me put my hands over my face and cringe. And all of the other acting was wonderful.
My favorite parts of the movie were all the Dumbledore's Army parts. Very fun to watch.
And those are great pictures of the Knight Bus, Memccart! I missed it the first time it was in NY, and it's coming back for the book release, but I'll be in Michigan. I'm sad to miss it, looks very fun!

v. cool pics, memccart, thanks for posting them!
Syl got in too late last night, we didn't make it to the movie theatre. Hopefully I'll get to see it this weekend! I'm always interested to see what's included and what's been left out because it can provide some clues as to what's going to happen in the final volume. JK always works on the screenplays and I'm sure she wouldn't cut out something that's about to become important in the end...

I read that the 1 main thing JKR said was very important to leave in the script was Kreatcher. Very interesting!

But it was ok to leave Lily out of the memory?! Does that mean that in fact all our Snape/Lily theories are wrong?! THAT CAN'T BE?! Kreacher barely did anything anyway! (in the film) Jo said that this is her fav film version.... Me so confused!!!!

I saw Order Of Phoenix last night, I really liked it and I agree with most of the things you said, neh. It was very strange to leave Lily out of the memory, that was one of the things that surprised me. And, speaking of Sirius's death, i thought I'd cry and I was ready with lots of tissues last night...but it wasn't as sad as in the book. I loved when Sirius said:"Besides, the world isn't split into good people and death eaters. We have all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the power we chose to act on. That’s who we really are"
I thought it was great when Dumbledore called Voldemort "Tom"(because "fear of a name increases fear of a thing itself"), what about Harry and Tom survive at the end and Voldemort dies...I guess it doesn't makes any sense, Tom actually chose who become.

Yes, i love that they kept that in. It feeds into the idea that in the end Haz will have to defeat TOM not Voldy; he'll have to truly differientiate between the two and look past the myth in order to defeat both.. if you get me. I mean DD was always so determined to recognise Voldy as still being the confused angry young man, so perhaps Haz must learn to do the same - and i think that fortunately, he;s already on that path. Even the film acknowldged this, with keeping Haz saying "i feel sorry for you" as he was being posessed. (great job again Dan, btw!)

I got what you mean. It's great when he says he fell sorry for Voldy/Tom, I also like the importance given to the choices...and that Harry chose, another time, to be different from Tom. Good job!

Yes, you make a very good point Neh (as always!). HP6 was all about Harry becoming more and more familiar with TOM, and obviously Dumbledore saw that the key to getting rid of Voldemort was to focus on the character of Tom.

Aw, thanks Jefie! I was reading an essay last night that spoke about Voldy/Tom's psychology, and reminded the reader that while in V form, he often refers to himself in the third person "Lord Voldemort rewards loyalty"/"Don't lie to Lord Voldemort Muggle, he knows" etc. and they said how this could be a sign that even HE recognises a small (very small albeit) piece of himself that is not this great evil persona... as though there is still some Tom in there and he knows it, perhaps not fully but on some level he accepts the fact that a human part of him is still housed somewhere inside - and perhaps he's just so dam desperate to get rid of this part that it's really what's been driving him to get Haz, make the Horcrux and become fully immortal and shake off his roots entirely, once and for all. Mabye! Another essay also really dissed on major theory regarding Snape, Lily and Voldy telling her repeatedly to move aside. As i'm sure many of you know, people believe that Snape may have bartered with V for Lily's life being spared but the reviewer pointed out a moment of dialogue from Snape in "Spinner's End" - something about the Dark Lord never making bargains. The reviewer suggested that Voldy may have been so determined to spare Lily because he has a pattern of leaving someone alive after a Horcrux death so that they can be blamed for the murder - the house elf for whatsherface, Frank for the Riddles, Hagrid for Moaning Myrtle (...or was it??? wait, whose death made the diary, do we know???) Anyway, i did have a point and now i've lost it!
