Another book soon to be turned into a movie:
Julia Stiles Opens The Bell Jar Source: Variety April 25, 2007
Julia Stiles will produce and star in The Bell Jar, the semi-autobiographical novel by the late poet Sylvia Plath, for New York company Plum Pictures.
Variety says playwright and screenwriter Tristine Skyler will adapt.
The Bell Jar tells the story of Esther Greenwood, a young reporter who seeks to make a name for herself in New York but spirals into depression and moves back to Boston. She eventually undergoes electroshock therapy and makes several attempts to take her own life.
The novel is regarded as a veiled account of Plath's own life. Stiles will play Greenwood; no other cast has yet been attached. Plum hopes to go into production early next year.

Wow that is so weird, I'd never even thought of the possibility of making a movie out of The Bell Jar. I think this is another one of those could be good, could draw people to reading but at the same time could be bad. I think it could be bad because one of my favourite things about the book was Esther's strong voice and I think that can be difficult to translate into a movie. Hmmm... I will definately be interested in seeing this one though!

Welcome back, Jefie!! You're right, Dom. It will be very hard to render Esther's character into a movie. I'm so curios to watch it. I saw S&S last week and I really liked it, I enjoyed so much Emma Thompson's acting. I think it's really well-done, also because it made me wanting to re-read the book.

It's odd because i saw that post and immediately thought of Julia's character Kat in 10 Things I Hate About You, and how in one scene she was sitting on a couch reading The Bell Jar.... things come full circle, sort of! There's so much speculation about the possibility of turning Twilight and its sucessors into films.... one thing that makes me proud is that number 1 on Stephanie Meyer's dream cast for the role of Bella is Aussie actress Emily Browning! Hurray!

Ella Enchanted was absolutely horrible with no relevance whatsoever with the book! I've heard that too. My best friend LOVES the book and has convinced me to put it on my TBR list, but she hated the movie.

I can't read the book before I see the movie. Then I can't watch the movie without tearing it apart from being different than the book. So, for me, it's better to watch it and then read it because then I can judge both separate from the others. And sometimes it's alright to imagine the actors as the characters because it helps you put a face to the name (unless the casting really sucks)
