I'm almost done with the book and I love it. I can't put it down! I'm excited for the movie.
I just found out that it's directed by the guy who directed the 2005 Pride and Prejudice, which is one of my very favorite movies. I have high hopes for Atonement now!

I saw a preview on tv yesterday and I really want to see it. But I also really want to read the book first and I don't have time. Oh the dilemma...

I know EXACTLY how you feel, memccart! To coincide with the film's upcoming release, all the bookstores and general stores have the film tie-in editions of the book out, all at really good prices.... i'm SO tempted to buy it and ignore all the other books i have to read! *i think part of this temptation is the prospect of James McAvoy's face on the cover...mmm.....*

I've been plagued by the same problem. However while I like McAvoy I'm not sure I like the film tie in cover art. Hmmm.... So I keep debating whether I should buy it or not. I have a real problem with buying books with cover art I don't like even if I really want to read them. I had the same issue with Middlesex.

haha! I was having the same issue like all of you. I decided that I really detested the movie cover art and went for the original cover art which I thought really captured the plot of the book... I can't wait to get it!

My problem is that the movie tie-in is much cheaper so I can't bring myself to buy the more expensive one but I also can't bring myself to buy the one with the film cover lol

I feel like a poser every time I buy a movie-covered book. They look so incredibly "fake", if that's possible

I don't mind some of them, like I like the movie cover of The English Patient, but a lot of the time I prefer the art work versions. It just doesn't look right having a photo on the front of a book to me.

I usually never by the movie tie in editions. I have the original cover of Atonement, and I really like it. A few books that I like the movie art (or in this case Broadway art) better are The Devil Wears Prada and Wicked. However I didn't like The Devil Wears Prada, and I haven't read Wicked yet. For those of you in debate about whether to see the movie before reading the book: I've read some reviews of the movie, and they say that it's good but not great - It doesn't capture the power of the book. My favorite part of the book was the ending: it's a surprise, it's gorgeous, it's gripping, and it's heart wrenching. I think that seeing the movie first and spoiling your experience reading the end of the book would be very unfortunate. That's my advice, but feel free to disregard it if you really want to see it in theatres.

No, that's good advice zedla, unless you're like me and caved in about 2 years ago and read the entire plot summary anyways, just so you could know how the book ends, so i've already spoiled it for myself, hehe! I agree that the original cover art is great; for ages i couldn't get that girl out of my head as BEING Briony, but now i've seen the young actress they cast in several clips, she looks so very powerful and effective, that it's become ok to think of her as inhabiting the character.

I just finished reading the book and I absolutely loved it! I had wanted to see the movie too but I always have to read the book first. Now I'm not so sure I want to see the movie... I just don't think there is any way the movie will be so powerful and gripping and amazing...

I finished this book a few days ago, it was amazing and now a friend and I are going to go see it tomorrow. I'm excited. It's nominated for so many awards I'm sure it's good in its own way. We can't expect it to be as good as the book because few movies are.

I've just finished the first part and I really like it so far. I can't wait to discuss it.
