*Hi to all - sorry i've been away for so very very long*
Why is it that the one time when being a few hours ahead of practically every other country in the world would be oh so very handy in getting us BD before others, we have to wait until Monday?! I ASK YOU!!!!

I liked the original Twilight. I thought it was cute. However, of the series as a whole and its messages, I must say that I am not a fan.
I don't like the negative light in which Bella is portrayed -- she's so weak and she seems independent at first, until her life falls apart and it becomes clear that she's overly dependent upon men, which bothers me. She falls into a depression because Edward leaves. Then she needs Jacob to pull her out of her depression.
It's entirely possible to be in love and independent at the same time. Look at (the obvious example of) Elizabeth Bennet. She's strong-willed and intelligent even in the end, when she has Mr. Darcy. I'm not even going to go into the fact that the early 19th century had a much less accepting view of strong women than today.
I was going to read Breaking Dawn (I'm only 117th on the library's wait list!), just to know how the story ends, but I heard that it's so terrible that I probably won't. I'm not going to give anything away other than that I heard Breaking Dawn is written like a badly done fanfic (ouch).
I do like Alice's character, though.

Oh dear... a badly written fanfic... like we need more of that being published! *ahem, pretty much every single Phantom of the Opera continuation....* I agree 100% with what you said about the messages of the series halie - completey. Both the portrayal of Bella and the characterisitics of her two "love interests" send a very worrying message to readers, indeed. To see all the teen fans just worshipping these two guys, both of whom harbour qualities that frighten me at times (possesvie much, boys?) ... it's just depressing. That's why of the two series, i would easily pick the Gemma Doyle Trilogy (A Great and Terrible Beauty etc) Still, Twilight has been an enjoyable and addictive read and i'm willing to give the final one a try, if only to yell at the pages!

I prefer the Gemma Doyle Trilogy, too! Now there's a strong woman for you.

Amen! *actually, 4... well 3 strong girls and a heap of strong women too*
Ugh, is anyone else reading/hearing the bad bad bad reviews for Breaking Dawn? It's released here tomorrow and though i am going to buy it, i am nervous as all hell that i may spend half the time tearing at the pages!

I'm not going to let the bad reviews stop me from enjoying it. I agree that Bella is not the best role model for girls - it could be teaching young girls that they need protection from men. And that just goes against my ideals (and it is one of the reasons I dislike Bella and Edward together).
But I also like Twilight much better than the Gemma Doyle Trilogy (is that what we are calling it now?). I've only read the first two but I just could get into them like Twilight.
I got Breaking Dawn yesterday but my 15-hr a day job doesn't give me much time to read so maybe I'll finish someday...

I'm about 80 pages in. It was hard to get a copy! Only one store in my area had any copies for sale at about 11am this morning. Borders didn't even get anything in beyond what was preordered!
I've noticed that Bella would be a bad role model too. But I'm not letting that or it's bad initial reviews influence my enjoyment of it either. Of all the things out there that young girls are absorbing I don't think the Twilight series is all that bad.

I don't think every book has to be written so that someone can be a role model. Same thing as tv characters are not written to be role models, they are meant to entertain.

I enjoyed The Gemma Doyle Trilogy as well! At least Bray stuck with her own canon... Meyer made up her own rules along the way and then broke each and every one in "Breaking Dawn". I still have no idea how Bella got pregnant since vampires have no fluid other than venom. Makes no sense whatsoever!

I read all of the books in the Twilight saga and fell in love with them! Twilight was the best out of all of them but I am happy to read all of the books. I am now reading A Great And Terrible Beauty and all the books in that series and I am in love with them too ;D. These books take you out of the real world and into a world where anything is possible. These are great books and perfect when the world is getting you down. ;D

That's a good point greengirlpenguin - people often frown on escapism as a concept, but with books especially it can be a lovely and welcome thing! I know i've been one to diss Twilight of late, but i will never deny that it is addictive reading and can certainly transport the reader. The same for the Gemma Doyle Trilogy. I linked to this in the BD thread also, but it's applicable here too. It's just some comments on certain issues some fans feel are contained within the series as a whole: psa.blastmagazine.com/2008/08/16/twilight-sucks-and-not-in-a-good-way/

I think all Meyer wanted to do with this book series was to entertain people, and she did! Some may say BD had a horrible message, but I don't think she really ment it to have a message. I think all she wanted to do was take you out of the real world and into the world where anything can happen! But that is what I think and you can believe whatever you want!
