Here in the US, I usually go for the big chains like Borders and Barnes and Noble, because they're well stocked, nice and quiet, have good bargain sections, and have cafes.
In London, however, there is this shop called Daunt's Books which is so cute and cozy... that's what got me thinking about bookstores.

My favorite bookstore is the Strand in NYC. They have an amazing selection - 18 miles of shelves, and really good prices, nothing in the store is full price. I also love that they have both new and used books. The only bummer is that by being so crammed with books, there's no cozy area to sit down and read. Most NYC bookstores are like that though. My other favorite bookstores in the city are: Skyline Books, Books of Wonder, Book Culture, and Biography Books. I also like Barnes and Noble a lot - good discounts and cozy stores. I love the cafe.

We don't have a lot of bookstore franchises in my area. There are mainly three: Dymocks, Borders and Angus & Robertson. And there's Kinokuniya in the city. I'd have to say Borders is my favourite because it's so incredibly huge and has everything really. Plus there's a Borders in my area which has Gloria Jeans (a coffee shop) upstairs so that can be nice. And it sells not just books but magazines too (i'm not talking about cosmo etc., but other ones like Nylon which are difficult to find in newsagents).

I absolutely love Half Price Books. We just got one closer to my house a few months ago and it's great! They don't have a predictable stock of things like the large chains do since it is a secondhand book store. That's part of the fun, I could find a book there that I can't find in a larger store. I always buy the cheapest version when I go to Border's or Barnes and Noble, but a lot of the time a nicer edition of the same book is the same price here. It's great! I can go there to get pretty books It doesn't have the coxy atmosphere of other bookstores, though. They just expect you to buy the book and leave, not to linger, but I would like to spend a whole day and a couple hundred bucks there!

Generally Borders, it's the biggest and best stocked store in my area and I get coupons in an email from them every week. But I also like McLeans Booksellers. My favourite second hand shop is one called Indigo books, it's pretty expensive for second hand books but it's so well organised and full of quality stuff rather than a lot of the other ratty second hand book shops around. I think for my next buy I'm going to finally try out Betterworld.com though.

I don't have one that I really like. I don't normally buy full-priced books, so for new books at cheap prices I like Barnes & Noble (1st choice) or Borders (2nd choice) for their discount/sale books. As for used books, there are a few used bookstore in the towns around mine, but none that are my favorites. I'll go to a ReUzeIt store about once a month to see if they've gotten any new books in, and I make notes in my calendar of the major library books sales!

There are two bookstore in next city (where I do all my shopping and go to school.) I don't like them. Collections are bad and books are expensive. I bought my books used or when I'm in Helsinki from Akateeminen kirjakauppa (=academic bookstore.) I have planed to order some books.

I want a bookstore like the one in The Thirteenth Tale--the one Margaret and her father own. It sounds so wonderful... I want a bookstore like that too I don't have a favorite bookstore, there are some good ones in the city but books are mainly full-priced and they don't sell used books. I usually buy books when they're at least 20% or 30% off.

My favourite bookstore is Feltrinelli, unfortunately there isn't one here in Verona, I go to the one in Milan whenever I get the chance. Here in Verona I like Fnac and when I lived in U.K. I used to go mostly to Waterstone..

I like a chain store called "Mayersche", the one back home is huge but still nice. And they have quite a lot of foreign language books especially English. I buy mostly used books at the library sales though.
