I asked this question in the "TBR" thread and there were a few responses, so I started a new thread. Here's my original post and question... Since I just started seriously reading (and loving to read and own books, etc) within the past year, my TBR list is so long it's overwhelming! I want to start reading every book on the list. It's like I'm literally a little kid in a candy store with exactly $.10 and I have to choose just 1. How can I do that? There's so much to be read - so much to be learned about - just so much! AAAHHHH! Just having an overwhelming book-thought-day because my list is way over 100.... and I come to this site (Rory's Book Club site as a whole) and you all mention books and I look them up and think - Oh, I must read that! My question to you is - How do you choose what you're going to read next?

Cool thread! Your list won´t get shorter after ages of intense reading As for your question: For me my mood is important (classic, kid´s lit, etc.), then if I actually own the book or can get it in the library. But often it´s all very random, like last week a friend dropped this amazing collection of short stories on me and I put that one first Yesterday I watched the virgin suicides again and that put me in the mood for the book, so I started that one immediately.

I usually have several books I haven't read at home (and always buy some more) so after I finished one I think about what kind of story I want to read now But sometimes I also buy books because I want to read them immediately... I don't really have a routine

Same with me, I buy some books and also check out books from the library. It mostly depends on my mood - if I'm into serious literature, British, light, comic, biographies.

For me it's a "epoch-gender" mood. Depends if I want classic, contemporary, dramatic, humorous, fantastic, etc. But that mood usually shifts before I get to the middle of the book, haha

A couple of years ago I decided not to buy any new books until I had read all the ones I owned but hadn't read. That didn't work out at all. But I do actually have a kind of system in my book shelf, there's a line so to speak so I always know which to take next. But of course, if the book I'm reading is a bit heavy I get to cheat and read something light along with it. I'm a geek, I know:)

It really depends on my mood. I personally hate starting new books. So I jump into a new one right away. Once I know my characters, I'm happy...
My TBR list is also huge. Its kind of comforting to know I have years of books ahead of me.

At the moment I don't have much reading time (I'm averaging one book a month) and so I generally read either our book club book or one of the books I've been sent to review for vibewire.

I've usually been one of those people who buys one book at a time or maybe two and read those first before getting more. But lately there have been sales and stuff so I have 5 books sitting, waiting to be read. I always feel bad getting more unless they're deeply discounted and just can't be passed up, so I make my way through the ones I already have. I make sure to not have a huge stack of books waiting to be read because you never know what you might be into. But I do have a list of books that I try to pick off of before I go randomly browsing.

I have no idea how I choose what to read.. I usually read the books I got from the library first, because they need to get back.. I read my own books usually when I have vacation or something (because I like my books to stay clean, and they don't stay clean in my bag ) I don't think I really put much thought in it.. just sometimes I choose a book on it's size, when I'm not in the mood to read something long, I pick up a small book.

I've got a whole stack of books at home I haven't read yet, so usually I just sit down in front of it and go with what I'm in the mood for. That's always a moment I really enjoy, when I get to pick my next book!

I usually have to spend a long time in front of my bookshelf and pick a few possibilities, the one that appeals to me most I pick.

I have so many books to read, but there's not much rhyme or reason to how I chose. It's usually based on mood, and I tend to want to read things I've purchased recently over things I bought a while ago but still haven't read. I do go back and select from the older books too though, it just doesn't seem to be as often. My reading moods jump around, it's hard to predict.
I also select books that we're reading here, and for another book club I just joined. Also, if there's an upcoming author event I want to go to, I try to read the book first if possible.
