I'm really hoping that because of the closeness of the Democratic primaries/caucuses (whatever they are lol) that it will encourage more young people to actually vote. Voting is so important. Especially with the state of the country right now...

Did you guys hear about how Bush is rooting for McCain telling the press that he is "conservative enough" for the Republican party??? And Huckabee just pisses me off. He talks as if Christianity is the only religon practiced in the United States. I am not Christian, so hearing him talk about "Our Lord Jesus Christ" and how the Ten Commandments should be our ONLY governing laws irks me!

Yeah, I agree - but since Christianity is the dominant religion, you're going to see politicians discussing it. Esp. rebuplicans who need the support of the religious right.
I think McCain should distance himself from Bush if he wants to be elected. He may get the conservatives on board for now, but he'll alienate the independents he needs later. But, I want him to lose, so I guess I'm happy Bush is supporting him.

It seems odd that a serious politician would put so much emphasis on religion... I live in a country where most people are deeply religious and still I don't think religion is a big issue in politics here... They only cover the Hillary vs Obama aspect of the election here, so I wasn't aware of Huckabee's opinions. They sound ridiculous to me! Isn't there a church-state separation in the US?

Yeah, there is a separation of church and state, although many Christian politicians don't deny their religion has some influence on the way they work. I'm a firm believer in the separation of church and state, because I'm not religious. I don't mind if politicians are religious, it just depends on how much they let that influence them. Huckabee would seriously scare me if he became president, just because he'd start a type of civil war since we're not a Christian country. And we'll never have a national religion because Congress will never pass that if a president suggests it...I hope.

I wouldn't be seriously scared of Huckabee - he has to work within the confines of the constitution. Sure, his conservative christian faith will impact his decisions, but he is still limited. Now I'd be more concerned that he can appoint the next two (probably?) supreme court justices and they are the ones that decide what is constitutional...
Plus, I think that it is a virtual impossibility for Huckabee to win the nomination even if he wins all of the primaries. And he told Tim Russert that he did not want to be VP.

Two justices is a lot if you consider the makeup of the current court and who the two justices that will probably be leaving are. And Bush just appointed two justices. It would be really nice to have Democrat appoint the next two.

I agree. I'm not so fond of the Republican majority right now.

Well technically we have a balanced court right now. 4 liberal justices, 4 conservative, and Kennedy as the swing vote. But he seems to be swinging to the right more often than not lately so another liberal would be nice. But you never know what you're going to get. The first Pres. Bush appointed Souter and he became pretty liberal. And O'Connor was supposed to be really conservative but ended up being the moderate on the court for years.
I'm sorry, there's the law school nerd coming out in me. I'm fascinated with the Supreme Court.

I'm annoyed that Huckabee hasn't dropped out yet. It's statistically impossible for him to win enough deligates to win the nomination.... and yet. He. Is. Still. There. I guess it's the principle of the thing, finishing what you started, but I think it would have been benefitial to him to pull out earlier rather than wait till the formal end, especially if he plans on running in the future.
I'm sort of moderate when it comes to politics, but I tend to bend towards Republicans so out of party support I picked McCain especially since he's very liberal on certain issues.
I would genuinely be fine with either Obama or McCain. I have a lot of respect for both candidates and feel they would both do a good job.
However if Clinton gets the nomination, McCain has a better chance of winning because she's so disliked by so many people. And for me it's because she's trying to be so tough and ends up being really abrassive. She doesn't come off as being assertive or tough, she comes off as a witch if you know what I mean. I feel like she would be more respected by a broader base if she wasn't so IN YOUR FACE about everything. And the attacks that her and her husband have been employing on Obama only makes me dislike her more.

But now that there is the scandal about McCain and the lobbyist, Huckabee and even Romney have a small glimmer of hope again. And for me it's because she's trying to be so tough and ends up being really abrassive. She doesn't come off as being assertive or tough, she comes off as a witch if you know what I mean. I feel like she would be more respected by a broader base if she wasn't so IN YOUR FACE about everything. I don't necessarily disagree with what you are saying, but my inner feminist is screaming at me to respond. It's really unfair that women come off as unattractive when they try to be tough and aggressive. If a woman acts like a man, she shouldn't be written off. I don't know if this is the best example because people are upset with Bill Clinton, too, but in general I think women should be able to be aggressive and still be respected because men can do that.

If I were Huckabee I think I would just pull out and save my money for something else. It's very costly to be in a presidential primary.
As for the whole Hillary thing, I don't really like her despite not knowing why I don't like her. She seems to have similar views on issues to Obama, but for some reason I just don't like her. It's not because of her aggressiveness, but maybe deep down I just think that I'll be voting for Bill and not Hillary (presumably he will be one of her advisers, if not officially, since he's held the job before). Maybe I'm just not ready for a female president. I just like Obama's personality, the way he seems like a regular guy who wants to help the regular guy.

I would love a female president, but I just don't think Hilary Clinton presents herself very well. I mean did you guys here that lame speech she made about way back when when she was duck hunting in a pond in the cold water. What a load of bull. I wish she would just stop trying to please everyone. I think she would do better if she was just genuinely herself. That's all it takes anyway, be yourself and people will like you.
I don't dislike her because she's a tough female. I'm a tough female. I'm all for being a really assertive woman. I actually dislike all politicians who go after other candidates with as much vigor as she is. I was sooo pissed off by Bill Clinton and his remarks on Obama. I also didn't like the spat between McCain and Romney. Look at how McCain and Guliani treated each other. It was so much more pleasant. I know that if I were to ever run for a political office I wouldn't even respond to the types of things that these candidates are pulling. It's disrespectful and makes the whole race a joke.
