There are people who freak out because their kids read Harry Potter?? It´s a strange world! My mom never says anything like that. She reads mostly crime stories and isn´t much into classics. So she doesn´t understand where I got that from but she likes it. The only time she was unsure was when I started Agatha Christie novels when I was six. I don´t think they´re too violent or anything but I guess she was right that they´re not for kids.

Well, it does have magic, and some religions are against that.

I think that's basically because of the magic. Otherwise, I don't understand what the problem is.

I don't know if it's so much the magic but the fact that witches and wizards/worlocks are supposed to like summon the "forces of evil" and are "satan worshippers" that my mother doesn't like.

That's so crazy! It just shows major lack of judgement if you can't see a book for what it really is and think your kid is going to be as clueless as you are.
The only book I remember my mom stopping me from reading was Christiane F. when I was like 6 years old (I found it in my big sister's room) and I guess she was right about that one because there was some pretty graphic stuff in there and I had nightmares for weeks!

i also think that people who judge entertainment books because of witches and wizards are crazy. I think there are more bigger problems with children these days... Parent's who shelter their kids too much have the children who are naive and get into trouble later in life. They seem to shelter them from the wrong things in life.
That's my opinion...

I´ve never met a really religious person in my life so I had no idea magic was evil or whatever. Jesus did magic I thought that the news were exaggerating when they said that especially people in the US were religious fanatics or prudes or sth. Just like people tend to think Germany only consists of neonazis. The book I´m reading at the moment deals with a fanatic religious family. It´s crazy. Computer games or tv seem to be the problem but I think kids from stable families wouldn´t run amok because of that. What was the topic of the thread again?

The topic was supposed to be about the Worst Book but somehow we went from Da Vinci Code to Harry Potter. That was prolly me. But my mom freaked out about Brokeback Mountain too (the movie, but she didn't seem to realize that I could buy the book/short story). There's nothing wrong with homosexuality!

Especially when it involves two really hot guys ;D Just kidding but wow, it must be tough for you sometimes, Kristie I just have so many friends that are gay, it's sometimes hard for me to believe that there are still people out there who feel very strongly against homosexuality but I'm not that naive, I know it still happens.

I thought the big drama about the movie showed how stupid and intolerant people are even today. I really don´t get the problem. I liked the movie and the shortstory even more but their sexual orientation was only the obstacle found in every movie about relationships. Mostly it´s pregnancies or racism. I didn´t get why people couldn´t see that it was a beautiful and tragic story about love in general. I heard people boykotted (does that form exist?) the movie.
Do you get along with your mom, Kristie? Must be really difficult because of her opinions but she´s still your mom.

I'm reading the novel "Maurice" right now and it's a love story between to male students - it's so well written and so desperately romantic, you quickly forget the theme of homosexuality and just want the two characters to be together. Love is love, no matter if it's a guy and a girl, or two guys or two girls.

It's good that you two get along anyways and that at the same time you were able not to repeat the pattern you've seen at home. Like you said, it's the way she was brought up and those values are part of it. She's far from being the only one of her generation who thinks that way, but I'm glad to see that our generation is much more open-minded. I guess most of us have managed to free ourselves from the shackles of religion and trust me, coming from Quebec, where religion was so oppressive for so long, I know what I'm talking about

Yeah, it´s pretty difficult to lose the believes you were brought up with. I guess not being religious is a characteristic of our generation. I´m Catholic on paper but I don´t practice it and I don´t even know someone who does so I tend to forget how important religion is to some people. It´s really great how you can get along with your mother but still be so different.
