I write in the margin only on my textbook but I underline sentences which I like, always with a pencil and only on my own books.

i like it. i underline, highlight, write little notes like "wtf..." or "OMG!" or even "i knew it! i knew it!" just random stuff. But for the HP books, I don't mark them the first time i read them. I have read them all but the 6th and 7th at least a few times each so I always just go back and add some notes. But as for the 7th...my beloved 7th book, I'm not going to write in it. I got post its out and put them on some funny pages, important parts, etc. I'm just going to write on those instead.

I've realized that I only write in my paperbacks, never in my hardcover books

i am OCD when it comes to my books too. if im carrying a book with me, i usually try to wrap it in something that will protect it to prevent bent cornors. the paperback creases upset me, i try to hold the book just right so it wont bend. i keep trying to think books are meant to be read, so its okay if they look read, but i just like everything to be perfect. i like looking on my bookshelves and noticing how beautiful it looks.

I try so hard not to dog ear my place in books but I can't ever keep myself from doing it for more than a few days!

Usually, if I'm reading a text book or a book for school, I circle words I don't understand, look them up, and write the definitions in the margins...but I just started doing that and I don't think I have the patience to do it for all my school books. So I guess I'll just pretend to understand the story. Or use sparknotes.

I don't write in the margins, but I underline like crazy. I take what I underline and put it in my book journal. I don't like brand new crisp books. I like them worn and written in. It shows that they've been somewhere and have been read by countless other people. I try to buy my books from used book stores. I love the smell when I walk in.

Good For You!!!! I myself am really anal with books. I like them neat and clean in my bookcases. I don't bend them crease them and I hate the line from the binding that someone mentioned earlier. My favorite thing to do is take down all my books and clean off the shelfs and dust of the books!!

i write in the margins only in Harry Potter and school books because its vital information I'll need to remember later. If I'm just reading Jane Eyre, I probably won't write in the margins.

I confess I'm a freak! I cannot go 20 pages without writing something in my book. OCD! I most often do it in books for school, classics (which tend to get me to underline and write ideas/thoughts). I don't do it wilth my nice hardcover copies, but definately paperbacks!

I hate margin writing. Chances are I won't go back to see what I wrote and the next time I read the book, I might not know what I was talking of or I just don't feel the same way (as often happens when you read a book a second or third time).
That and I just don't like the idea of "vandalizing" my books as Lorelai put it in reaction to Jess's margin writing.
