Watching a gilmore girl ep. today from season 2 - jess stole one of Rory's books - when he returns it to her, she notices jess wrote in the margins. when rory tells lorali she asks rory what is there to write in margins? so its got me thinking, do you write in margins? and if you what do you write?
I almost always write in margins esp. for school. I used to hate writing in the margins of school txts because i want to keep my textbooks for my office one day, but then i realized i might as well. it helps me for when i go back and look the reading.
i dont write in the margins if im reading a book for myself.

I only write in the margins in my textbooks. I never think to have a pencil handy while I'm reading for myself and I often find it distracting to try to take notes. Sometimes I will go back through the book looking for phrases I liked and write them down in my book journal.

The only books in which i have written in margins are HP books 5 & 6.... and that was purely because i was so overcome by ideas or opinions at very specific moments.... however, it certainly stands out, coz in both cases it was done in red pen, hehe! But i figure, they're my books and i'm the only one i can annoy by doing it! I will say though that the idea did occur to me AFTER watching that particular GG episode... which must have been boradcast (over here) back in 2002-ish/early 2003 , to be chronologically correct.

I've written in margins but only for school... I just read them and don't look back. But when there is a great sentence, I'll underline.

I do write in my books - I'll write in the margins or underline. I generally only do it in classics - especially in the cheaper Barnes and Noble editions that I like to buy. i like to underline passages that stand out, or that I love. If a thought comes to mind - about anything really - I'll write it in the margins.
I don't write much, if at all, in my nicer books. At most I would very lightly underline something with a pencil.

I tend to write in margins too. Especially for school, but also in other books. Basically like the rest of you, I underline stuff I like, and maybe comment or something or just put a question or an exclamation mark or something like that. The best example is probably my Bible, it's full of margin writings etc!

I only write in books for school. I try to keep my other books in good shape, and I usually don't like to write in the margins of normal, everyday books because it would distract me from the story. I do write in the margins for our bookclub discussions though.

I only write in schoolbooks, especially when I have to learn something, but I never do in my own books, and i find it really annoying when someones doe sit in library books...
I just can't write in my won books, because I want them to stay really nice, thats also why I don't fold the corners etc.

I write like crazy in my schoolbooks, but I'm not allowed to write in our regular books - Ben would be very upset as he thinks books should look clean. For our bookclub books, I keep little post-it notes in the back so I can write on that instead. I've said this before, but I think books should look read, so I would probably write in margins if they were just mine.

I fold the corners and break the bindings. Well, the bindings at least look like they've been bent and such, I don't want the book to fall apart. So my books look read, especially from just taking them everywhere, but I don't write in them because I just want to read it for the story, and not think too much about it (most of the time).

Not all the time, but when I do it's usually an exclamation mark or just a few words... I also underline sentences I really like.

I like my books nice and clean looking, I hate when books look worn and falling apart. That's why I buy all my books, and make sure that they stay that way.

I write the most in books for school, underlining quotes I think are useful or commenting on important bits. In books I own, I tend to copy out quotes I like into a notebook I have and reference the page number, rather then marking up the book.

Personally, I hate it. But I tend to furiously write in the ones our school hands out whenever we have discussions and what-not. I am OCD when it comes to my own books. Who else hates that annoying crease you get on paperback binding of a long book?
