Italo Calvino. I've read his "Marcovaldo", "Il barone rampante" and "Il visconte dimezzato", he was a great writer!! Primo Levi, "Se questo è un uomo" e "La tregua". Italo Svevo, "La coscienza di Zeno" Beppe Fenoglio, I've read all his works but my favourite are "Una questione privata" and "I ventitrè giorni della città di Alba". Bianca Pitzorno. When I was 10, I read "Ascolta il mio cuore" and "Diana, Cupido e il commendatore", I loved them! I'm going to purchase "Le bambine dell'Avana non hanno paura". Carlo Cassola. I read "La ragazza di Bube" for school 4 years ago and I enjoyed it very much! Stefania Bertola, I've read only one ("Biscotti e sospetti") of her books but I think she has a great style of writing. Michele Serra, "Il ragazzo mucca", he's a journalist. Giorgio Bocca, he's a journalist (older than Serra) he always writes very interesting books about current events and about history of Italy:very very interesting! I'm not a great fan of poetry but these are my favourite: "L'infinito" by Giacomo Lepoardi Poems by Giusepe Ungaretti "Ossi di seppia" by Eugenio Montale (it's a collection of poems) My brother would suggest Stefano Benni, he loved all books by Benni! I love his style but I don't like his books...I don't know exactly why.. There are other classic writers, such as: Dante ("La divina commedia"), Alessandro Manzoni ("I promessi sposi"), Giovanni Verga ("I malavoglia"), Grazia Deledda ("Canne al vento"), Ugo Foscolo ("Le ultime lettere di Iacopo Ortis"), Luigi Pirandello ("Il fu Mattia Pascal"). They are very important for italian literature but I think some of their works are a bit boring!

Alessandro Baricco is pretty popular over here, is he popular in Italy too? François Girard, the guy who directed "The Red Violin", is shooting "Silk" right now, an adaptation of Baricco's novel (I think the title was "Seta" in Italian) - Keira Knightley's in it.

He's very popular! I have to admit that I've never read anything by Alessandro Baricco that's way I didn't mention him in the list! Anyway, I know that my brother suggested his friend to read a book by Baricco, but I can't remember the title! Umberto Eco is also very popular here (he was also in the Rory's book list, isn't it?). My father has a lot of books by Eco but I have read none of them yet ... I'm going to read them one day!

I was thinking that a list with italian titles of books isn't very useful, so I have searched for the english titles...obiuvsly I can't find all the books I mentioned, but here there's what I've found:
The Path To The Spider's Nests by Italo Calvino If On a Winter's Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino Nonexistant Knight and The Claven Viscount by Italo Calvino The Baron On Trees by Italo Calvino A Private Matter by Beppe Fenoglio The Twenty-three Days Of The City Of Alba by Beppe Fenoglio Confessions of Zeno by Italo Svevo The Moon And The Bonfires by Cesare Pavese The Business Of Living: Diaries 1935-1950 by Cesare Pavese The Reeds In The Wind by Grazia Deledda The House By The Medlar Tree by Giovanni Verga If This Is a Man by Primo Levi The Truce by Primo Levi Bébo's Girl by Carlo Cassola The Last Letters Of Jacopo Ortis by Ugo Foscolo The Late Mattia Pascal by Luigi Pirandello The Betrothed by Alessandro Manzoni Selected Poems of Giacomo Leopardi Selected Poems by Giuseppe Ungaretti The Selected Writings Of Salvatore Quasimodo by Salvatore Quasimodo Cuttlefish Bones by Eugenio Montale
They're all classics because I couldn't find any contemporary authors (I read just the unpopular ones?!). Maybe the list is better now!

My reading of italian novels has been sorely neglected I'm afraid. That said I have a few favorites: Passion by IU Tarchetti (origional title was Fosca and it was changed for the english translation) The Bethrothec by Allexandro Manzoni

There are 6 books by Eco in my parent's shelf, I will read them. One has a very interesting title but I can't remember it now, sorry! the 2 book by Primo Levi are good, I liked them very much and I will buy and read the other things he wrote. The Bethrothec are very popular in Italy, we use to read it 2 or 3 hours a week during the first 2 years of high school (or senior high, I'm not sure how to translate it!)...I liked that book but I think that many students don't like it because they HAVE TO read it for school.
