I finished Part I today and I'm loving it so far. My book has some discussion questions in the back, but they're more for once the book is finished, so I'll wait til the end to post those. I can't figure out why I like the book so much! It's so simple, but different...

Part one, people!! I really liked this book, I liked the characters. I think she captured them well I'm not exactly sure what points I'd like to discuss, so I'll leave that to someone else haha, but I just wanted to remind everybody it's time to discuss!

I've only just started so I'll be a few days late in the discussion, but I'm really liking it so far too! I was surprised to find out the author also wrote 101 Dalmations!

I finished Part 1 yesterday and so far I'm enjoying the novel. What I like the most about it is how it sort of combines the styles of Jane Austen and the Brontë sisters. Even if Cassandra hadn't mentioned it, it's easy to pick up on the similarities. The castle itself is such an important part of the story, it reminds me of how places like Pemberley, Netherfield, Mansfield Park, Northanger Abbey, etc., are so important in Austen's novels that they almost become like secondary characters. But the gothic setting of the castle has perhaps more to do with Jane Eyre's Moor House or Wuthering Heights... The arrival of the two brothers again reminded me of Bingley and Darcy's arrival at Longbourn, with one being nice and peppy and the other one being a bit more subdued and dark. Not to mention that just like the Bennet sisters, Rose is looking for a husband to put her out of her misery and poverty! But again there is something darker in Simon Cotton - not quite like Heathcliff, maybe more like Mr. Rochester. It'll be interesting to see where this leads...

I'm glad I wasn't the only one to see similarities between I Capture the Castle and Wuthering Heights. I'm reading Wuthering Heights for school and I usually find similarities between my pleasure reading and school reading because I get confused sometimes!
I liked how it does have similarities between some of the victorian writers but it isn't boring. I have failed to finish reading Jane Austen many times and the whole era of writing just doesn't interest me. I Capture the Castle is much more entertaining. I love it how Cassandra is a bookworm too.
But, by far, my most favorite thing about Part 1 is how the book starts. I wasn't going to take part in this discussion because I was pouting over The Secret Life of Bees not getting chose, but I saw I Capture the Castle in the bookstore and read the first page. I was hooked. The first sentence is so unique and funny!

I really like how the book starts too, a very good opening line! I agree with Isa about the castle being like a secondary characters. As you guys, I noticed the similarities (although I haven't read all Wutering Heights), especially regarding the setting and some characters' situations, and I found them interesting. I also liked Cassandra's description of how they found the castle, their expectations and then the contrast you can feel with their reality, with the way they're living there. (hope it makes sense..)

I haven't read wuthering heights, so I wouldn't know about that. but i also liked how they see themselves as jane austen or... one of the brontes.. Charlotte? I liked that they discussed that. I liked how even the cat and the dog stay in character which one of the newcomers do you like the best? I think I like neil the best. (at least for the first part of the book )
