Don't read anything you don't want to! If you're having a hard time reading Atwood, it's just not worth it.
Even if "everyone" loves it or it's a classic, just don't read a book you don't like. I learned that lesson with Vanity Fair.

As stated on my Vox:
I'm not a very good completer-of-goals, but I have thought about some goals for reading for the year 2009. So here goes:
Read 52 books. That's (on average) a book a week. I have been looking at a lot of small children's books though, and will not be counting the very short ones towards this goal (with the exception of The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen). Any of these books that are longer than 90 pages I will count though. (90 pages is the shortest novel I've read to date, so that's where the number came from.)
Read 10 books published in the 19th century to meet my Centuries of Books goal.
Read 20 of the books that are part of my own personal library at home.
Buy no more than 2 books a month, preferably less. I'm actually trying to only buy books that are continuing series I have already been reading. But, to meet my 10 books from the 19th century goal above, I'll probably have to buy some more. You'd be amazed to find how hard it is to find some of these old books at the library.
Read no Jane Austen. This should not be hard since we had the JABC and I, therefore, read many of her books this past year. While I love Jane Austen, I have read all of her books, save Emma and all of MP, twice. There are many books I own and haven't even read once. I need to shelf her for the year I think...

I've decided that I'm not going to set a goal for how many books I want to read. Because I didn't even come close to last year's goal. I'm just planning on reading a lot, haha. And what comes from that, we'll see at the end of 2009.

I learned that lesson with Vanity Fair. I've learned that you need to be in a specific mood to read certain books. The professor I had for a Margaret Atwood class analyzed everything way too much. I want to read her on my own terms this time.

In that case, I completely understand.

Im not good at keeping goals so the only reading goal i have for myself is to read more. I love to read but I never make enough time for it therefore I do not read many books a year. So I am hoping to read a decent number of books this year and to match and pass that number the following year Seems simple enough. Hope I stick to it! haha

- Read 60 books, - Read Gomorra by Roberto Saviano
Also, one of the hardest goals of 2009: buy no more than 23 books, which is an half of the books I read in 2008.

I didin't get even close to my last year's goal, so this year I didn't make a goal how many books I have to read.
- Read more books from Finnish authors. I read only one book by Finnish author last year. - Read more in English.

I plan to read more finnish literature too. And I try to improve my english, if I decide to apply to university to study it. So more books in english for me too I also try to just read more. Some year I read over 150 books, but lately I just haven't got time or mood for reading.

I am going to try to read 300 books. Last year I read 106, so I think I can do it. I'm already behind though. I want to read more classics, and read the books that I already own.

i hope to read more of the classics. one, because i enjoy them more than any other genres and two, because they expand your reading abilities, they enrich your vocabulary, and they give you insights on how writers used to write back when. also the writers, in my opinion, were more distinct back then. Their writing was very recognizable i guess you could say.

So far I'm doing amazingly good on the read more, buy less part of my resolution, but I haven't kept up with the idea of reading in Spanish, I think that after last year's stretch I kind of needed a break...

My main goal was to read 48 books, or 4 per month. I've only read 17 so far this year which is an average of 2.83 books per month. But that's ok. I'm enjoying the books I am reading and I think miscalculated what my schedule would actually be like this year. I don't have much time to read during the week with work and dance and trying to get into the legal community. But I am doing pretty well on my reading more classics. And the rest of the year doesn't look much better. I just signed on to work on another campaign (I know, I'm crazy but this is in a much different role) so I have that added to my schedule. But, check out www.jimpiccillo.com/ to see my new candidate.
