In regard to jobs during college, my first year I didn't have a job since I was getting used to being away, juggling classes, etc. My second year I worked at a food service place on campus. It was not fun at all- I worked too much and they demanded way too much of me. This year I work as a tutor for various subjects like English, History, and most relevant to me, Spanish. Even though I don't work a lot of hours or earn much money with this job, it is enough for spending money and it is really flexible since I can set my own hours/how many people I want to tutor. It is also good review for myself and will be a good addition to my resume. I am most likely going to continue with tutoring next year (my last year). I think that any job that is related to your field or on campus will be the most flexible. I'm kinda in the same boat as you are, jobean. I want to make some money, but I don't want to compromise my grades. So I kinda struck a balance between the two. I Hope this helps!

Thanks for all the advice I'm going to start handing out resumes and looking for work experience which allows me to come in once a week after I get settled into university. And I'll look for ways to help out around the university - there seems to be a lot going on in the Law society!
