I agree with Isa. You can study anything - it's more the fact that you have a degree that matters. I studied Psychology and Economics in undergrad but I don't really use either of them. I just finished law school last May and I am now practicing in an area that I didn't study at all.

Currently I am trained as a bookseller (I passed my exams in literature and cost accounting already, yay!), but I am going to go to university in April to become a teacher for history and english.

I know it isn't too much related to this theme, but do you know what exactly is (was) Rory studying? I know that she wanted to study Journalism and Political Science, but then, I think, she said that she studied English..

I'm not sure, but I think it might be one of those degrees where you major in journalism but can also do other minors and electives?

Yeah, it's logical thought, but why would she say that her major subject is English (it was in the 7th series, I think), plus (I know it maybe doesn't matter, but..) I think that on Yale or Harvard, you can't have major subject journalism.. I know, it's bad topic and I'm really sorry for that, but nobody knows that..

Hmmm I never realised that. I guess the other possibility is that she did an English degree and there were some journalism writing classes thrown in there somewhere. I think that some of my journalism classes were available to English students. To be a journalist you can just have an English degree and practical experience (eg her work at the college newspaper) to get into it. That's just a guess though, I really have no idea how the American system works.

Next year I plan to major in Communications/Journalism and minor in French. I have to chose a track for my major, like radio or print journalism but I don't know what I want to do. That field is changing so quickly. If I choose print journalism, that part of journalism could become obsolete by the time I'm 40. One college I am looking at incorporates every aspect of journalism into its curriculum so I will be able to do a lot of things with that. They also have a pretty large English literature requirement for a journalism degree, so basically I will be studying 1/2 journalism 1/4 French and 1/4 English!

If I choose print journalism, that part of journalism could become obsolete by the time I'm 40. You don't need a degree in Journalism to go into the field. I love to write but am majoring in International Relations because I'd rather focus on something that could help me in journalism if I chose to become a writer rather than specializing. Besides English, there's political science, another language, economics, communications, almost anything. Just thought I'd throw that out there. Besides, in 40 years there will still be journalism, just a different format. You could work for an online news source.

If I choose print journalism, that part of journalism could become obsolete by the time I'm 40. You don't need a degree in Journalism to go into the field. True, anybody can be a journalist! And I really doubt magazines will disappear... maybe the newspapers, but there really aren't a lot of new newspaper journalists, so you might get a job eeasily well, at least, that the way it is here in Holland. I major in Journalism and I've finished one minor and am now doing a different one (thats the way it works here..) My first minor was Communications & multimedia design, the one I'm doing now is Corporate journalism. But I really doubt I'll really be a journalist after I graduate...

I was originally a Business major but I hated it so now I've switched to History and I couldn't have picked something that I love more. I hate when people tell me I won't be able to do anything with it because it's not true. The skills you learn as a historian are applicable in so many areas! My brother said the FBI hires a lot of History majors because we do so much research and that is also one of the reasons so many Medical Students are history majors.
However, just in case, I'm getting a teaching credential for high school.

Have you picked a topic for your thesis yet? Thanks! My research is on the Scottish literature of the beginning of the XX century, in particular on the work of female authors and critics...I can't wait to start working on it!In the next weeks I'll meet my supervisor to discuss the details!
