I am close to the ending, less than a hundred pages left.... it's really exiting now....

That´s good to know, I was afraid I´d be disapointed because I expect much of this novel after all the positive reviews

I realized I haven't posted here yet. I've read Special Topics in Calamity Physics and I really enjoyed it. I think the language was so beautiful, Marisha Pessl's style of writing is amazing and also her giving examples of things she's describing, it's great. I loved the idea of title each chapter with a book and it's so interesting . I'm not sure about all the references, I personally liked them and the impressions they give, but I understand that sometimes they may be annoying. I loved how Blue "filters every life experience she has through books" (I read that quote in an old post). After all good things you said of Special Topics on Calamity Physics, I had very high expectations on it and now I can say they hadn't been disappointed at all.

I finished this book last night which was kind of stupid because I had a hard time letting go of it and couldn´t really sleep. I thought it was amazing and everything the reviews promised, but I´m also glad that I knew the ending was a bit open. I think I wouldn´t have been able to go back to the "normal life" like Blue. Probably would´ve stayed in bed and waited forever. Hope that was spoiler-free!?

I'm glad I knew about the open ending too. It's a kind of conclusion I usually enjoy but it also leaves me disappointed for a moment.

I wasn't disappointed with the open ending until I came here and read that you are supposed to be able to figure it all out. I was ok with the open ending, but now I'm frustrated because I don't know the "right" conclusion.

Even though it was open ended I thought the ending really worked. I enjoyed it.

so.. I've just finished it.. have you all figured out the conclusion by now? I really didn't pick up most of the clues... and the questions in the ending explained a bit to me.. but also made me more confused..

i was a bit perplexed throughout most of the book as well. The last couple of chapters were the really exciting ones though; also i liked reading the beginning of the chapter title. At certain parts that was the only thing that i looked forward too

yeah, the beginning was sometimes really slow.. and uninteresting.. but somewhere in part 3 I wasn't able to put it down... I think I need to read it again to pick up more clues...

I really liked it, but the end was so confusing.

Well, I am reading it for the second time now, because I really want to get a conclusion. But the more chapters I read the more I get the impression that I will never understand it. But I really want to and therefore I will keep on trying.

I know I still don't understand it! Ok, here is my idea, and stop reading if you haven't read the book yet, cos I guess it is a ***SPOILER!*** ok, I think Blue's dad went to Africa. He's been walking around with those newspapers about the trouble in South Africa (it was South Africa, right?), I think he wants to help out. I think all Blue's life he's been trying to make her independent and after the fight and when she quotes him and he had no idea. I think something clicked, and he tought she was ready for life. Blue has said in the book that she's afraid one day he'll pick up his stuff and leave. So i guess thats what he did, to help other people, since Blue doesn't need his help anymore. Thats what i think. I have no idea what to make of the Hannah part though

I have never thought about that, but he used to talk about that topic (it was South America, I think ) a lot and also teached it in his classes. I will keep on reading and try to keep your suggestion in mind. Maybe I learn what happened to Hannah then and why...
