At least I've read The Jane Austen Bookclub and I think it's ok, I didn't expect Jane Austen's books to be more than a background so I wasn't disappointed by a lack of references to them (I don't know if this is only due to Jefie's post ). I liked the idea of a bookclub as a place where people and their personal stories meet. And I loved the first line: "Each of us has a private Austen". I often couldn't get into the book, I couldn't identify much with characters and even choose a favorite one...probably that's the reason why I haven't enjoyed it as much as I expected. I didn't like the "reader's guide" at the end, with synopses of Jane Austen's books, luckily I've already read all her novels because those summaries would completely kill my interest in reading them.

hehe, fair enough lu - and i have to agree with not really feeling a very strong connection to any of the characters.... except perhaps Grigg to some extent (for me), bizarrely!! It was an odd little book.... certainly nothing like i expected at the beginning but then i'm not sure if this is a good thing! The film looks like it might be taking a much more Hollywood, standard approach - just using the bare bones of the plot and making it more accessible... for once in fatc, this might be a blessing!

I read it quite a while back and while I liked it, it didn't live up to my expectations.

The movie looked really pathetic. I don't even think it got much theater time

I've read the Jane Austen Bookclub in the summer. I didn't really liked it. The characters were boring and I love the Jane Austen books, but this one really disappointed me I didn't know that there's a movie of it. I don't think that one is going to be a big hit

I tend to avoid "re-makes" of books. Personally I believe that if the author didn't include it than it is none of our business to ask about it. Kind of like those bizarre Jane Austen Novels, Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife etc....a lot of that stuff is bad writing! Just a lot of explicit scenes for America's sex crazed population!!! Part of the whole reading experience is being able to have a brief glimpse into a person's life and then continue the story the way we want too! It ticks me off when authors try to "Expand" on another person's work. If he or she thought it was that relevant than I am sure they would have written it.

"Re-makes" of these classics aside *and i'm with you on your views Sage... stuff like that should just be saved for online fanfiction - unless it's REALLY well-written, like Susan Kay's Phantom* I still think this book was a bit of an oddity, and the film adaptation got on my nerved primarily because they did the whole Hollywood thing and made a few of the woman younger than they are in the novel, as well as Grigg (but he was Hugh Dancy, and he is a charming goofy dude!) I don't understand why film-makers feel so certain that an audience can't handle or feel sympathy for an older/less attractive/overweight character... i mean, did the success of BJ's Diary teach them nothing?! It can work, and it shouldn't be avoided so foolishly!

I'm glad everyone likes the idea If people want to volunteer to do bits on specific books that's fine, but if not that's ok too. I will probably just do normal discussion myself, I can't really commit to much more at the moment And I will see what I can do about the new board!

I'll volunteer to help with a book for this. I'm picturing the role as someone who would help find good questions to add to the discussion? If so I'm definitely willing, that would be fun.

Question: Does this book spoil Austen's books in any way? I really wanna read this one but I haven't read all Austen's book yet and wouldn't wanna spoil myself.

I have to admit I didn't pay much attention to that (I had already read all Jane Austen novels when I read Jane Austen Bookclub) but I think it spoils them, I mean it does make references to how they end.

I just got this book the other day and I can't wait to read it. I'm waiting till I read Northanger Abbey first because I don't want it spoiled.
