Howdy y'all! ;D Now, if this topic has already been addressed i apologise. But i'm doing a course on Myth and Fairytale this semester and i just though that if anyone wants to discuss the weird and wonderful worlds of the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Anderson, Angela Carter etc. - here would be a place to do it!

Thanks heaps for the link jobean - i always think of Gregory Maguire's "Confessions of an Ulgy Stepsister" when i think of Cinderealla these days... that and the film Ever After, which is still one of my favs. This website has always been a great great one for anything and everything to do with fairytales, so do check it out - many goodies have been found there! www.surlalunefairytales.com/Hvaing studied Red Riding Hood in depth once for an English project, i have always been quite aware of it's very adult themes and associations, but since reading Angela Carter's Bloody Chamber collection ("The Snow Child"), and a short story of Neil Gaiman's "Snow, Glass, Apples" i have come to notice how very very disturbing the Snow White myth is... i mean really... very unsettling mother-daughter rivalry.... heart eating... 7 men ordering a young girl about... a prince making out with what he assumes is a corpse!!!! Good gravy....

I taught a Year 10 unit on Cinderella transformations once and that was really interesting. One of the book's I got the kids to read was Babette Cole's Prince Cinders. They thought it was hilarious and it was good for looking at all Cinderella's character traits in a different light.
Anthony Browne's picture book adaptations (eg, there is a Hansel and Gretel one) also very good.
Haven't read Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, Neh, but did enjoy Wicked. The stage show of that is going to be on in Melbourne later this year. Thinking I might go down there to see it.

Same here, although i *might* wait and see if it's gonna tour... even if it doesn't go nationwide, it will most likely do Syndey at some point. I'll see what the reviews say first i think. It's a show that needs a great cast to be worthwhile i feel. It's amazing how popular modern and/or adult adaptations of fairytales have become in literature over the last 15 years or so... just go on Amazon and see how large the collection is, and how it varies in quality often aswell!

Yes, and movies too (eg, the Shrek movies, all the Cinderella adaptations such as Ever After, Ella Enchanted etc). My daughter was quite keen to go and see that 'Sydney White' movie with Amanda Bynes in it but only seemed to be on for about 5 minutes so we missed it.

You are probably right, Neh. My own movie snobbishness has dissipated a bit since I had kids. It is so hard to find good movies to take the kids too (esp in Australia when the choice so limited) that I tend to regard a good kids movie as one that the kids can enjoy and doesn't have me completely beside myself with boredom. At least with teen movies, I can kind of analyse them for teaching purposes. Back to the original topic of fairytales, have heard good things about this book: www.amazon.co.uk/Beast-Blonde-Fairy-Tales-Tellers/dp/0099479516/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1206851424&sr=8-1Actually wouldn't mind getting a copy of it. Used to have a collection of Marina Warner's subversive fairytales and read it a few times (quite unusual for me).
