Hey guys, I was just wondering...I'm thinking about reading something by James Joyce in the near future. As I haven't read anything by him yet, I am not familiar with his style of writing, which I have heard is difficult to get used to. So, if any of you have read anything by him, could you tell me which of his books would be the best to start with?

I wouldn't go with Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man...I found it very difficult to read. He writes with a stream of consciousness and it's hard to get through his style. Maybe try Dubliners first or Ulysses.

I want to read Ulysses soon. It's my dad's favorite book of all time. He got me a copy for my birthday.
He told me that if there's a confusing part, just keep going. You don't need to understand every single part to understand the book. And you can always go back with a companion guide and review the parts that confused you.

I have Ulysses I just haven't read it yet. But I think I'll take your dad's advice when I finally do read it, Zelda!
Thenephilim, I read the Dead last year, it's one of the stories in Dubliners (I think), and I liked it a lot, so I'd think Dubliners would be a good place to start, a little lighter maybe...but then again I have nothing to compare it to so;)

Thanks, this helps a lot. Zelda, I'm going to take your dad's advice too when I read it- sounds like it would help.

I've been wanting to read something by Joyce, too. I don't really have time now, so maybe I will do it in the summer

I'd suggest to start with The Dubliners, I read it for school years ago and I liked it, it also seemed easier than the extract from Ulysses which was on my English Lit school text. instead I hated Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man, I found it difficult and I couldn't get into the story at all. I haven't read Ulysses yet but I really want to.
