I'm looking forward to the discussion. Of course I've already started it, probably like a lot of people here!

I started it this morning between classes and I love it. I'm just a page or so from the end of the first chapter, and I really think it's going to be great! I'm excited to start the discussion soon

I read the first 4 chapters so far, and I really like it, there's nothing much to say about the plot itself because I sense it's going to develop soon enough. I like how McEwan lets the reader into the same situation from different POVs and how he builds his characters.

I think his point of views are amazing. Sometimes I wished he'd hurry up and get to what I wanted to know. However, he really is a great writer. Very talented.

I may have a hard time breaking up the sections when speaking about them. I read the entire book due my impatience. I could not put the book down. Plus, I've lent the book out to a friend who really wanted to read it.
For this first section the style had me in captivated. McEwan's style is very elegant, and the point of views are very interesting. Briony is a very dramatic girl, she always looking for the dramatic in life. She wants it to inspire her writing. These children seem to be independent because they have part time parents. Emily is referred to as Emily, and most days she's in her bedroom observing the sounds of the house. She doesn't seem to contribute to the family, only when she feels the need to prove her authority in the house. Even then the children try to calm her, but they know she has no real authority. When their cousins come to live, Briony has already picked out their parts for her play. She doesn't even think to consult them, she seems to expect their participation.
We see most of Briony's character in this section. We see her flare for the dramatics and her constant mention of details. When she sees her sister jump into the water, she can't help but try to find a story in what she sees. When the play does not go as planned Briony quits, I think it's more for attention than anything. She believes she is a failure, it really is just her trying to make herself into a character.

I agree with you bookaddict, I think that you can clearly see how Briony does everything in order to turn her usual daily routine more interesting, other than writing and directing she also tries to live through her sister's life. What appears to her sister as no big deal, Briony cherishes. While Cecilia sees Robbie's attempts to be with her a nuisance, Briony sees their relationship a great romance.
