I would go for the Thirteenth Tale as well. It is probably one of my favorite reads. Very cozy and good for a holiday reading

Most of the books you mentioned are on my tbr list so they sound good to me. I've already read 1984 and The Thirteenth Tale but I'd like to discuss one of them.

Most of the books mentioned sound good to me... I have The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Klay and A Thousand Splendid Suns on my wish list for Christmas! I'm hoping that in the next (and final semester I will have more reading time so that I can take part in the discussion...

I liked Kavalier and Clay but it is unbelievably long. And I agree with Dom that Special Topics is very long as well. The Book Thief is long too, over 500 pages, but the pages are smaller and there's more spacing (since it is technically a YA book) so it goes really quickly. I would be up for discussing The Thirteenth Tale. It's incredible, and I love how Gothic it is, it would also be fun to discuss its relation to classics such as Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. I also have a reading group guide to it with many good questions to discuss. My only comment is that we'll have to be careful to stick to the schedule on what chapters we're discussing, because there are good surprises in the plot that those who have already read it must be careful to keep secret until we all get there.

I would be up for the Thirteenth Tale, too. I just read it a few months ago, but I loved it so much, I'd be willing to reread/skim it. And I definitely agree with Zelda about the surprises in the plot. We definitely need to be careful not to disclose more information than what everyone's read. We have a Thirteenth Tale thread on the boards somewhere, don't we?

I like to suggest 1984 by George Orwell.

I think Atonement is a good suggestion. Alot of people have been mentioning it.

OOH I would like to read that! I don't think a lot of people have read it yet and there seems to be a growing interest in the book especially because of the movie. Good Suggestion!
