i understand dom's comment about why kitty wanted to marry vronksy. for some reason i didnt get that impression right away; although everyone blamed the princess for kitty's illness.
I thought i would like vronsky too, but as soon i read that he had no real intention of marrying kitty, he reminded me of stepan, who has no regards for his romantic actions and the effect they have on women.
i enjoy noticing all the ironies throught the book. all the charachters are so vital in understanding the whole story and the other chachters. they each play off of his each other. tolstoy did a nice job planning out this beautiful story.
this is the first book in which i started a book journal on my thoughts, i have to so much to say. there is alot going on in this book.

Question for tahlia: what do you put in your book journal?? And what impression didn't you get? ("for some reason i didn't get that impression right away; although everyone blamed the princess for kitty's illness") I started reading part 3 yesterday and came to the part where Levin's brother (Sergei Ivanovich) comes to visit him in the countryside and they get into a huge discussion about why or why not L should rejoin the zemstvo council (hope I spelled it right). I have to say, the entire time I was rooting for his brother. L was going on about how, if there was no personal interest in it for him, he didn't feel that he should do it, and while, some of the time, I'd feel the same way, I kept wanting to shake him and say, "But that's not going to make everyone else around you lead a better life." Quite frustrating... I loved the part about Kitty at the spa trying to become a better person. It's just like what I sometimes feel like: very dedicated to doing this or that which will help you overall, and then when one person says or scorns something, dropping it immediately because it makes you feel foolish and fake.

("for some reason i didn't get that impression right away; although everyone blamed the princess for kitty's illness") i put in the book journal my thoughts about each character and whats going on. my interpretation of each of the characters. little things i want to write down as i am reading. i didn't understand right away what Dom said: that kitty only wanted to marry vronsky because her mother wanted her too; she taught to believe that is who she should marry. maybe at the time i didn't read that far to agree with what dom posted. kitty's father (the prince) blamed kitty's mother (princess) for kitty being sick. they all knew her illness was not physical, it was emotional - a heartbreak. her father blamed her mom b/c she wanted her to marry vronsky. had the father had his way - kitty would of married Levin.

Mine has 8, too. Is the one with 2 parts a version that has parts cut out?

I'd say the ones with lesser parts just have some of the eight parts condensed into larger parts.

So, I'm about to go into Part 4 and lately I've been feeling a lot of animosity towards Anna and Vronsky. When Tolstoy started writing about Levin, I breathed a huge sigh of relief because it seems like his life is so much simpler and less infuriating that the other two. Maybe it's just that the idea of their adultery makes me feel like I'm twisted up in it myself which makes me very edgy and nervous. Or, maybe it's because Levin's life really is much simpler. True, it's in his life that the most philosophical and confusing questions come up. All the same, though, Levin's love for Kitty is a lot purer in my mind. It doesn't have as many obstacles and lies involved with it. It's rather like a relationship in preschool: it's very innocent and childish but very true. Also, I have a question about Anna's pregnancy. When she tells Vronsky that she is pregnant, is she telling him that it is his child? Because, if it is and she wants to avoid confrontation with her husband, she could tell him that the child is his, couldn't she?
