it's the same here, 11 for the price of 12. Do you actually find time to read them all zelda? That's why I haven't subscribed to anything much. My family subscribes to the local paper, the sydney weekend papers and the bulletin and I often don't find time to read them all. A pile starts mounting up at the end of the bed and every week it grows It's supposed to be my job to do the same kind of thing, look at all publications possible for possible ideas for stories or publications to pitch to and stay up to date with current affairs but it's hard to get on top of! I definitely have a stack of ones to read, at all times. I definitely don't read them all cover to cover, I read what I like from each one. I also save any articles I really like, and I rip out pictures that are cool because I like to make crafts and art projects with magazines. I just started subscribing to SO many in May when I moved here, so in May when I have to renew them, I'm going to evaluate which ones I want to keep. I think only a couple will go. Time has to go I think. I like Time a lot, but there's no "time" to read it, haha. I get most of my news online, too. That's a weekly magazine, so not getting that will help keep the pile down. The fashion magazines don't take long to read at all. I love the design, and looking at the clothes, but I'm not really interested in many of the articles. I do like read the culture sections - books movies and music - and sometimes a few random articles.

that's why I love Frankie and Yen so much, they have the great aspects of fashion magazines but while predominately avoiding stuff about how to please men, like it's all women should be interested in or something, and makeup and beauty tips, which are generally paid advertisements

It feels like recycled material over and over again. There are so many things that DO change, like politics, news, and cultural events, that are much more interesting to read about monthly!

I'm with you on that, but to be fair, it is hard for the magazine industry to move away from being advertising based. That's how magazines started, from what I read in my PR class. They were a tool designed to sell stuff. My favourite woman's magazine is Instyle because in the UK it tends to be more fashion focussed and less sex quiz and gossip obsessed, plus its very good with trends. A lot of the instore magazines that are free are very good like Tesco and Superdrug magazines (they're UK stores)

That's another thing I don't like about them, after you've read a couple of copies, you feel like you've read every one because they aren't very innovative. Some of the high brow women's mags like Marie Claire aren't quite as bad because at least they have some kind of sensationalised feature about a murder or something, instead of one on how to tell what you're guy is thinking.

Dom and Ren - you both just listed my two favorite fashion magazines - ones I actually like to read.
I love In Style for a lot of reasons. Their pictures of celebrities are basically limited to pictures of them posing at different events. I like seeing these because the dresses for the red carpet events are often so beautiful, and the pictures of them in a little more dressed down outfits for other events are very gorgeous, and can give me ideas about how to dress better. I like that they are not trashy, invasive pictures of celebs trying to live their lives normally and caught by photographers. I also love their sections about home decor and travel. They have fun party ideas and recipes, and incredibly gorgeous photos of houses. I love looking at beautiful interior design.
I also think Marie Claire is pretty nice, they have interesting, well-done articles, and a lot more about current events than a lot of other magazines.
I also have a question: how common is it in other countries to read American magazines? Here we have a limited selection of magazines from other countries, a lot of fashion magazines. I like to read these, I find them interesting. I like the British Marie Claire and In Style, and sometimes it's fun to read the British Glamour to see how different it is. My friend Derek recently went to Australia and brought me back a GQ with Ian Thorpe on it (one of my crushes). I'd read more if they were cheaper. But I don't know anyone else who does this besides me - someone must, because they sell them. But I've never encountered anyone that I know that reads them.

we can get American magazines here, like the American Time and stuff, but there are Australian versions of all those ones, we have our own Cosmo, Time, Marie Claire etc a lot of the time. Actually I think there are a lot more British mags on our market than American ones.

I like Instyle for the same reasons you list. It's couture without being unapproachable. Stylish without pretension. Also the reviews are pretty accurate. Haven't read Marie Claire for a while, perhaps I'll purchase one for my next flight. It's not that common for UK people to read American magazines, they're pretty hard to find if you're not in London or near a USAF base. (I'm near two so have access to base via friends, thus feeding my krispy kreme and pixy stix addictions) Glamour magazine - forgot about this one. I do have a bit of a soft spot for it. It's handbag sized, the fashion is good, I like the reviews, I can skip the 'pleasure your man' parts. Will have to pick up some US magazines when I'm over there.

I do not think that US magazines are very common here, the only I've heard about is Marie Claire even if I've never read it. But I've not a good knowledge about magazines. In most waiting rooms you can find italian magazines which I personally hate, all about celebrities (not properly good pictures) and things like that...it's good to have a book! I know that advertisments are necessary for magazine industry, but about 80% of the pages of a magazine are advertisments (I'm not sure if this sentence is correct..) Is this the same everywhere??

You can get many American fashion magazines and newspapers here especially at train stations and bigger stores. But smaller more cultural orientated periodicals are hard to find. Yeah, there´s so much advertisement in fashion and gossip papers and there are always stacks of them in waiting rooms.

I subscribe to: Universum (Austrian pendant to the National Geographic) Spekrtrum der Wissenschaft (Scientific American) and since I have a horse: Cavallo and Pferderevue I regularly buy US InStyle UK Easy Living French Marie Claire and random UK Hair Magazines (they're generally much edgier than the US kind) and other mags where the visuals appeal to me (like Citizen K etc.). I think by now I'm at an age where you have to laugh heartily about the sex advice in mags like the Cosmopolitan. Here in Austria you get all the popular US and UK magazines (also French, Spanish and Italian), only the prices you pay are crazy. I can buy two English paperbacks for the price of some of those magazines. Like some of you I love the US InStyle mag, but what really makes me crazy is that the content is reused in the UK and German versions just with a few months delay and some articles even show up in Glamour (UK and German version) and if I remember correctly also Allure and Vouge articles are recycled. Seems that the same publishing group shuffles the stuff a lot between their different magazines. That's one of the reasons why I prefer the US version of InStyle but the UK version for most other mags (Elle, Marie Claire). dorothyparker85- I was really surprised that English magazines are harder to obtain in Germany and they're even more expensive than in Austria. I wonder why! Right now I have two 1 meter high piles of mags on my night stand, I just don't get to read them like I used to.
