I looked all over and didn't see a thread for this so I'm sorry if i missed it, but has anyone read Night. by Elie Wiesel? I just read it today and thought it was a really good book. Parts of it made me sick though, he describes the concentration camps so well........thoughts?

I haven't read it, but I've heard good things about it and would like to sometime. I have read one that sounds kind of similar called Ellie, I forget who by, it was for class a few years back. They're probably not related though

I read it many years ago in 9th grade and I can still vividly remember parts of it. I loved it then and I would really like to reread it again. Ben just finished reading it yesterday, incidentally.

I've read it twice, perhaps three times, and it really makes me think everytime. I can't help but wonder what sort of person could be so disillusioned to participate in something like the doctors at the concentration camps experimenting, or just the Nazis in general. I agree with what you said, dreamer, about the concentration camps being so well described. One time I read this was for school and we looked at an excerpt from Wiesel's memoirs describing how he cut Night down from about 800 pages! I mean, this book really packs a wallop for being so short, but the writing is amazing. He said that he had to write it so that something this terrible will never happen again...and I really hope that his goal works. This is one book I hope is never made into a movie (for obvious reasons).

I would definitely recommend moving it up on your tbr pile! I agree with you Kristie, I can't even begin to imagine what would make a person beat someone else like that, or how they could stand to work at the concentration camps. It's disgusting.

Here is a link to Milgram's experiment which tried to answer that question. I think it is watched in every psych class ever (I've watched it at least 5 times). The youtube video is a short version which looked decent but I couldn't listen (I'm at work) so I'm not sure if it's good. And I'm not smart enough to post it in here, so here's the link. Here is the wikipedia link for those who would rather read about it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milgram_experiment

O my. I took a psych class, but we didn't discuss this. I did, however, read an exceprt from Obedience to Authority: An Experimental View for my English 112 class. It was really interesting...
