have you ever read this author? what do you know about him?
i'm planning a trip to prague on october and in every tourist guide when it comes to culture i always read about Franz Kafka. i know he is absolutely and 100% famous and he wrote "The Trial" (Der Prozess) but i always considered him a bit "heavy" ;D
what do you think? with who anglophone writer would you compare him? do you have any suggestions for reading?

Wow I hope you enjoy your trip! I've only read The Trial. To be honest I didn't enjoy it, the ideas in it are very interesting and I can see what's good about it, but it was a very tedious and oppressive reading experience. This was because of all the bureaucratic stuff going on in it. But bureaucracy is a major theme of the book so I think it's deliberate on Kafka's part. I'll probably still give Metamorphosis a go one day though.

I have a book with two of his short stories, Metamorphosis and In the Penal Colony. I liked these stories, they are surreal. And they are dark and ugly and twisted. In the Penal Colony is quite brutal and disgusting, describing torturing.
I hope you have great trip. I'd like to go there too, there is Mucha museum that I like to visit.

I've only read The Metamorphosis, and I enjoyed it. It's a short story so even though it is quite intense, it doesn't take too long to read it. I agree with auringonkukka, Kafka creates a very disturbed and violent atmosphere, I don't think I could compare him to another author... I hope you enjoy your trip to Kafkaland! ;D
