I just realized I forgot to write about Mildred and she's such an interesting character! I think Mildred stands for all the people who have been "swallowed" by this new world.

So I read the chapter and I love this book, it´s amazing. We´re discussing till page 32? I can´t find the break, is that before or after Clarisse shows Montag to stand in and drink rain?

I think it’s very interesting that in the novel, firemen are men who start fires. I don’t quite understand how one can make everything fireproof so there’s no need for them to be there to put out fires. I also wonder, is this supposed to be in the US? I assume it is, but I keep having visions of Germany and the Nazis burning Bibles. Perhaps that’s because of Montag’s name (being German for Monday) and at the beginning during the fire, it “burned the evening sky red and yellow and black.” (p.1) which are the three colors on the German flag. Anyways, if this is in the US, what happened to the freedom of press law? I mean, as far as censorship goes, the US is pretty lenient in many cases. Why these three authors? I mean, Millay was bisexual and Whitman was homosexual and I don’t really know what could be considered wrong with Faulkner because I don’t know much about him, but I can think of other authors now who could be “controversial.” Just wondered if there was any particular reason those three may have been targeted… . Maybe it's set in the us but the imagery associated with burning books and the name montag implying nazi images is trying to compare this American society with Nazi Germany? It's the same kind of complete control that the citizens are under, the fear of being caught out etc. It does actually remind me a little bit of the book I'm reading now about a girl stealing books and loving books during Nazi Germany in that sense, but without the dystopic future society. Maybe Faulkner was included because his works are considered by many to be very deep pieces of literatue, As I Lay Dying is also pretty experimental along with that and quite different to anything else I've ever read. Also I suppose he is really well-known and stuff and Bradbury might have wanted readers to have that recognition of an acclaimed author. I agree that Mildred is a very interesting character, and not unlike many people in our society who are unhappy but instead of doing something about it or recognise it they fill the void with things so they can sink into an unthinking, occupied state. I agree her talking walls remind me a lot of the drugs in a brave new world as well. It's like he's substituted them with television, entertainment etc. It also fits in quite a bit with Bertolt Brecht's ideas about entertainment's capacity to keep people unconcious and in line.

I must admit - I never read this book in high school and I wish I had. It took me a second to get into but now that I am - I am sucked. I was telling my husband about the book and he asked me "So how do they teach people to be, for instance, mechanics, to fix these speeding cars if there are no books?" This would come from him because he works a car shop and a lot of his initial education was from books. Maybe I missed that....they must have SOME books that are allowed, right? Because I believe they refer to history books and rule books (I read ahead a little ). I wonder where they draw the line, and who it is that really decides that...who has the power? Is it just all the intellectual books that get burned?

Good question. I haven't finished reading it but I do think instructional books are allowed, but fiction and intellectual books aren't.

I think its somewhere at the beginning...they teach children by videos or something like that. They let people only the books that are not dangerous for them, for the system -books you can read without thinking about it, nonproblematic ones (or not problematical?!). I think it has something in common with world in these days,I mean the entertainment. Let people have fun and be happy and theres a probability they won ´t want to change it.And then ,take that awful and dangerous books away, one by one, and they wont miss it. Just few of them, and you can hadle this danger... Its unbeliavable how they manipulate with people, they tell them what they´re supposed to want, then they give it to them, just with some extra rules what they about the behaviour...and thats it I know its awful but it reminds me something ...the publicity( commercial or ad...not sure which of these is the right word ) is similar in something,it tells you what to buy and think... thera are also big differences i know.. thats my opinion, weird i know, and of course i am really sory about my english, hope you undestand it

I remember them mentioning books for learning. I think what was the big thing really was not wanting some to be superior to others. But, that's totally contradictory because not everyone has the same job so some must be more superior than others in certain fields. And do they all get the same salary? I doubt it...otherwise it wouldn't be so expensive for Montag to buy the 4th TV wall and everyone else can afford it, or so Millie says.

Though, I wonder whether or not everyone can afford it. Maybe Millie just heard on TV that everyone else could afford one, so she thinks they should have one too.
