All the book clubs in my area are for older people. They meet in the middle of the day and cater to retired women.
I don't think I would like a "real" book club as much. I like the freedom of this one. We don't have to take part in the book club book to have discussions. We can read anything and still talk about books.
EDIT: Now that I think about it, we tried to start a book club in law school but it never got past the first book. We just all had too much else going on. But I did enjoy the discussion for the one book. It was good because it was people around my age and could discuss books intelligently.

We had one going on at the office for a while and I liked the format because it was similar to what we do here: we'd meet once a month and bring the books we'd read since the last meeting and present them to the other members. I liked it because we didn't have to all read the same novel, and it allowed me to discover new authors and get great recommendations. But it was getting too difficult to find a time to meet so it sort of died after a while...
