Has anyone slogged through this v. long novel? Is it worth the effort? I've been really getting into the BBC's version of it with the actress out of the x-files, it's really very good and I'd be interested in having a look at the book because obvioualy it would have much more detail.

I'm not a fan of Dickens, I think he writes way to many details. I did enjoy Dombey and Son. You could give it a try, maybe skip over some details if you want.

I haven´t read it yet but I bought it used a while ago and I could see on the spine that the previous owner only made it halfway through. It looks funny

I had to read it for class once. It was alright, if you like Dickens. I do, but it still wasn't my favourite.

I think that many consented to the recent BBC adaptation being a good deal more interesting than the original novel... that's often the case (eg. many people think the film of Sense and Sensibility is vastly superior to Austen's novel) but you go for it if you wish to Dom! i could barely get through Great Expectations and that's meant to be a favourite of his works, so hats off to you!

My favorite Dickens was A Tale of Two Cities. But I think of all of the Dickens I've read (A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations, Oliver Twist, and Bleak House) you really need to just commit and give yourself up to it. It's worth in in the end I think

I watched the last episode today, overall I really enjoyed the series. I predicted the result of the case though, but I won't give it away to those of you who haven't watched/read it. I think I will have a go at reading it but I'll leave it until the story isnt as fresh in my mind.

I love Dickens! I haven't read this one though. It's soooo long.

I tried reading it at Uni and couldn't tackle it. After seeing the adaptation, I tried again and it is so much more approachable in the light of how it was portrayed in the BBC drama.
Well worth another try, I'd say.
