Mine how no to method to their madness. I have two bookcases and the only real "organization" is that one bookcase has books that I read a while ago i.e. high school and has harry potter books and this other hardcover series I read. The other bigger bookcase has anything I've read in the last two years on it. And any new books are stacked on end tables and dressers.

Classics on the big bookshelf in the hallway, along with children's book favorites.
Favorite contemporary books on one shelf in my bedroom, how-to/misc. on another shelf, series (all the Harry Potters together, etc.) and to-be-reads on another shelf.
