I recently read Love in The Time of Cholera and I was wondering what you guys think of it (if you've read it). I liked it better than One Hundred Years of Solitude. I love Garcia Marquez's style, I think it's great and I want to read more by him. I'm not a big fan of the characters instead...I didn't feel any sympathy for Florentino Ariza, I found him sort of annoying sometimes I also think the opening is brilliant, I mean, the moment I finished the book I started wondering "So, who was Jeremiah de Saint-Amour?? What did he write in the letter to Juvenal Urbino??" I was so curious! At the beginning I was sure Jeremiah de Saint-Amour would be one of the main characters... hehe

I really liked Love in the Time of Cholera (not as much as One Hundred Years of Solitude though!). It's my favorite love story of all times.
Florentino Ariza was a bit pathetic but I think that the idea is that his love made him that way. I don't know if that was Garcia Marquez' intention or not.
Also, I watched the most recent film adaptation of Love in the Time of Cholera and was very disappointed with it. First of all I think it should have been in Spanish, even though it was really for English speaking audience. I thinhk the assumption is of North American audiences is that they aren't smart enough or have the patience to watch a film with subtitles. To some degree this might be true, but in the intrest of authenticity I think it should have been in Spanish. I also thought that it was a bad book to make a film of because it spans such a long time frame and so they had to age the characters which looked absolutly ridiculous!

I bought this book last summer, but never got around to reading it yet. I've heard it's great and I really want to read it this summer. I also have One Hundred Years of Solitude and want to read that as well.

I'm reading this right now and I absolutely love it so far! I just don't want to put it down all I want to do right now is read it! I love Gabriel Garcia Marquez's style, I've read Of Love and Other Demons and another short story collection which I liked but this is definately the best of his work I've read so far. Florentino is kind of pathetic, but I haven't found him unlikeable because of it. I guess this book shows us the power of our first love, or love at a young age, to me really. Nothing has the power or innocence of falling in love so young.

I just started reading this book yesterday. It seemed to take me forever to get through the first section (50 pages or so). For some reason, it just felt really slow and dull to me. I continued reading it today though, and it seemed a lot more interesting. I think the problem might have been that I had just finished Twilight a few hours before I started Love in the Time of Cholera, so maybe I just had to allow myself time to switch gears. I'm enjoying it a lot more now!

I loved this book. I think it is one you need to have a bit of free time for though, ie, I rmemeber reading it on a beach holiday when I was willing to persevere with it. I always think of that holiday and that book as a combined magical memory.
