I'd really like to read this book before I see the movie (although I've made plans to see it this weekend so that's unlikely at this point), it looks really interesting. Is anyone else planning on reading it? wiki on the film: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Painted_Veil_(2006_film)

I've wanted to see the film for ages now - it was out at the cinema in the US early last year; i hate how dam long this take to get here!!!! Anything with Ed Norton in it, doing an accent, is good by me! But i do remember reading up on the plot and the novel and thinking "i will read that one day" - so my long winded answer is YES, i would like to read and i do plan to, one day. Where's the movie playing Dom?

I've started it today!!!I'm loving it, I am halfway through it... I've seen the movie with Jeremy Norton and Naomi Watts last year and I really liked!

I read it about a month ago and I would recommend it to anyone. Somerset Maugham is very entertaining.

But I'm really keen to read it! It's a pain I can't get to the shops till the weekend cos I have a Borders voucher that expires Thursday! Neh it is playing at Newcastle Greater Union. I didn't realise it was from 2006! Seems odd that it has taken this long!

I hate how our cinemas work!!!!! Well, be sure to let me know how it is. I believe it was after filming this that Naomi got together with her now husband, Liev Schreiber. For some reason whenever i remember how i want to see this film, i remember how much i want to see The Sleeping Dictionary, though i've always heard negative to middling reviews of that one, wheres this has been very well received. On the same note sort of, i've heard bad things about Silk too. All these dam films concerning stuffy/ignorant/prejudiced Westerners going to the East and being changed....

I agree...I read this book last year and it was beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time. I watched the movie and although I enjoyed looking at Edward Norton I found the movie kind of flat!

Neither Borders or Angus and Robertson are stocking it neh! If I wanted it I'd have to get it ordered, weird!

I've already lost much of my faith in the Aussie booktore catalogue, hehe. But if you want to order, i've found that A&R are a tad better and faster than Borders can be. Actually, i'll heck for you in Black Duck Books in Toronto - they randomly carried Wicked that time, i expect the unexpected from then now! But if that fails, then perhaps eBay? You always score good deals on eBay... well, apart form those tapshoes! *that was just sneaky of the seller*

so: i thought the movie was absolutely LOVELY. it was really beautiful and the book was great, as well. he writes really interestingly: sort of a cross between jane austen and modern dialogue. in any case, both are terrific! good luck!!
