There are a lot of good picks on there, but there are also some I have never heard of or wouldn't be interested in. To be honest I was kind of expecting it to be more classics and modern literature, I'm a bit of a snob about genre fiction sometimes, I know that it's good and everything but I wouldn't consider it an essential read. There seems to be quite a few genre fiction picks on there, for instance the Stephen King books and The Black Dahlilah (sp?). I haven't read them and I'm sure they might be quite good, but I'm not sure I'd say to someone you must read these before you die.
That said there are a lot of things on the list that I haven't read but would like to.

I'd have no problem reading 16 a year, but some aren't interesting to me, and I would rather read whatever I want more than just trying to read one person's (or however many people worked on this book) opinion of the best books of all time.

I think it's better to read books that appeal to you rather than from a set list. You would probably get more out of it in the end and reading wouldn't feel like a task.

I agree, because some of the books on that list really don't seem interesting to me..

I am also hooked on the Stephenie Meyer books. I have read Twilight and New Moon. Now I am reading Eclipse. Quick reads. Captivating.
