You can also read books online at Project Gutenberg ( www.gutenberg.org). They are all books that are not copyrighted anymore, so it is perfectly legal. I like it because I can sneak a few pages at work without anyone knowing that I'm reading.

I've used the Gutenberg site before, but most of the books are older, so it depends on what mood I'm in for reading the classics.

The way copyright laws work (this is my vague understanding of them) is that you are allowed to copyright your writing for so many years (50 maybe) and then your family can renew the copyright for so many years after your death. So any book that is available online is going to be fairly old.

It was fun to be able to read a little bit at work when I wasn't busy. It stinks because when my job is slow, no one cares if I do random things on the internet/computer, but if I picked up a book people would say "WHAT are you doing!?"

haha, well, I think it's nice to be able to read books online... sometimes you can't find a book, and you can just read it online.. although reading on a screen isn't much fun..

There are also several sites where you can sign up to receive these books through email. Each day they send you a small section, about 5-15 minutes worth, and you read a little a day until you complete the book. I think that's a very fun idea.

I prefer paper too, but (as someone said above) those sites are a good way to catch up on your reading if it's slow at work! (Just don't get caught!)

Oh I definitely prefer paper as well. I don't care how much buzz the Sony e-reader is getting - nothing will ever replacing owning and reading an actual book.
But it is cool that things in the public domain are now on the internet, and it's also cool because these same books can be recorded into audio books for free too - there are many free podcasts of people reading these classics. Some of the readers are very good. I listened to a great Tom Sawyer reading, on a free podcast.
This is also how you can buy the classics in the public domain so cheap - any publisher can put out an edition in an affordable way.

I prefer buying them, but sometimes at school I had to read too many books at once so I would download cheap ebooks on my palm pilot so that I could have them all with me and them not be heavy. Plus, I liked that I could write and highlight them which I would never do in a real book.

so, for publishers it isn't very expensive to publish these books, I guess... so, why do they let us pay so much!! I prefer paper as well, cos I don't really read complete story's on a screen... and I don't have a palm pilot, so I can't take them anyplace else then this computer screen.. but it is still nice to have a site like that

I like papers better but it is nice to have a site with books online Especially when I don't have time to go to the library (I'm a fast reader)!
