"Maurice" by E.M. Forster. Really great novel set in the 1910s about a young Cambridge man coming to terms with his homosexuality. Captivating story, very well written. It wasn't published until after Forster's death in 1970, for obvious reasons, although there are no graphic sexual descriptions - it's just about a man looking for love in a world that won't allow his feelings to grow.

White Teeth by Zadie Smith. The story is set in London and is mainly about the clash of cultures and the influence of upbringing. How everybody has different needs and feelings. A wonderful book to read. It really got me thinking and changed my looks and perspective on different cultures. I can recommend it: I call it a recommender

I have "On Beauty" by Smith, unfortunatly I haven't had the time to read it along with many other books on my shelves. Glad "White Teeth" was good.

I finished a couple lately. Helen of Troy by Margaret George, and I think I cried from the middle on. And one that was mentioned on the boards, The Little girl who was too fond of matches".

Last night I finished The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion.
It wasn't what I was expecting, but I don't really know what I was expecting.
I really enjoyed it though. (In case you don't know what it's about, it's her memoir about the year after her husband died.) I think it's good to read when you're younger, if you haven't had anyone extremely close to you die. Sort of to give yourself some background perspective. But I also think it would be an incredible comfort to those who have recently lost someone. The book and the words themselves form into a beautiful picture of what grief is - love, anger, disbelief, confusion, hallowness, etc.
There's also a memoir coming out soon called "About Alice" by Calvin Trillin, about his wife's death. It's coming out December 26th. It would be interesting to see how they compare, but I don't think I'll read that one soon.

This was the first thing of hers that I've read. I would now like to read more though, I have "After Henry" - one of her novels, out from the library.
One of my birthday presents was The Complete New Yorker on DVDs (super awesome) so I'd also like to look up some of the things her Husband wrote on there. (John Gregory Dunne)

I finished the play "Our Town" by Thornton Wilder. Great story and the treatment of the play was very interesting, kind of like the movie Dogville for those who've seen it (I didn't like the movie, but for a play it works really well). I've got another one of his plays at home, "The Skin of Our Teeth", I'll have to read that one next.

Started and finished visions of sugar plums today. A real quick and hilarious read. Got many weirded out looks from other people on the train because I burst out laughing every 5 seconds but I couldn´t hold it back.
