Just to add to the above talk, i like both versions of PAP equally, but for entirely different reasons. "Becoming Jane' was a lovely little film, but just as many Janeites complain about the liberties taken with films such as the 2005 PAP or the 99 Mansfield Park (both of which i confess to enjoying immensely despite their "flaws") it had a few elements that seem either highly implausible in keeping with what we presume to know of Ms Austen's life, or contextually incorrect. But as i quoted from James McAvoy over at IMDB: "it's not a biopic really. We're taking a literary figure - THE feamle literary figure of English literature - and using an early part of her life, that we know a little bit about, to hypothisise and draw paralells with her writing".

I'm sure I'm gonna want to see this movie when it comes out on DVD. I love what they did with Mansfield Park, just like I love Clueless and Bridget Jones's Diary. I also liked Emma Thompson's additions to Sense and Sensibility. I guess I like it when they give a new twist to an Austen story, and I think that's why I disliked the new P&P so much - they didn't try to make it new or interesting, they just tried to cram it all in 2h...

Excellent point Jefie.... i think that was also the issue with the latest ITV version of Mansifeld Park (starring Billie Piper - she did ok as Fanny actually... just not really canon). It felt incredibly rushed, and therefore not nearly satisfactory for getting to know characters and situations and as such care at all for what was going on. It's a real shame to see such detailed and clever plot butchered simply because of time constraints. Interestingly enough though, the other two ITV Austen adapatations which followed - Northanger Abbey and Persuassion - didn't suffer quite so much from this issue. I guess it varies from work to work.

I really didn't enjoy the Gwyneth Paltrow film version of Emma, so long and dull! I hope the book is more interesting! Clueless was a good modern twist I agree.

I liked the film well enough but I didn't really like the way the character of Emma was portrayed - in the novel, Emma reminded me very much of Eliza Bennett, only with more money: she's a very witty and lively girl, and I thought Gwyneth Paltrow was a bit subdued... I enjoyed the novel very much!

I have a natural disliking of Gwyneth Paltrow though so I think that my have affected me somewhat.

I agree, Emma the book is much better than Emma the movie. While it's no Pride and Prejudice, I really like it.

This wasn't the movie version I watched. I saw the one with Kate Beckensale. I've wanted to see the one with Gwyneth Paltrow just to see which movie I like better, but have yet to do so.

Yeah, I really liked it. And I thought it followed the book pretty well. Of course that was a year or so ago, so I don't remember much about the book or the movie aside from the general storyline.
