Very saddened by the loss of Sen. Ted Kennedy. Such a great man, great politician.

"Mexico now has one of the world's most liberal laws for drug users after eliminating jail time for small amounts of marijuana, cocaine and even heroin, LSD and methamphetamine. " !!! This scares the living daylights out of me. I live in a border town. Like I said before, people already cross the border to get drunk, now they'll go down there to do drugs, too. Seriously, the marijuana thing doesn't bother me as much, but heroin? LSD? WTF? Here's the full article: www3.signonsandiego.com/stories/2009/aug/26/lt-mexico-decriminalizing-drugs-082609/?&zIndex=155717

That is insane! I highly doubt that will help decrease drug criminality.

Perhaps they are focusing on the real issue: the suppliers and dealers. I think it's horrible when society gets it wrong and punishes the users instead.

My mom said it's supposed to decrease police corruption, because normally if you had drugs you would have to give the police money or they would beat you up or something, I don't know.

Samoa is pretty small, though, less than 200,000 people. It'd be different for someplace bigger, like the UK or US. But I agree that would be disorienting at first if you were Samoan!

I remembered some of you talking about Obama being nominated for the Nobel Prize (for peace)... and well.. I guess he won it!

I agree, Isa. I heard about this on the radio this morning on my way to work. I really couldn't believe it, considering he hasn't done very much for world peace--he's busy with fixing the US. But the radio announcers had a theory about his nomination for the prize. Apparently the deadline for the nominations was only 2 weeks after Obama was elected/instated (I can't remember which one) and, in the whole sweep of the news and everything, he was nominated for it.

Yes, but just because he was nominated for it doesn't mean he should have won it, there were other great candidates on the list. They said he got it because of the message of hope he conveyed to the world - so basically he got it just for being elected and kicking Bush out of the White House (I know that's not how it works, but you know what I mean). It's putting an awful lot of pressure on the commander-in-chief of an army that's currently fighting in two countries!

I agree with all of you, it's too soon, and he hasn't really done anything yet. However, Thorbjørn Jagland, the leader of the Nobel committee in Norway is a huge Obama supporter, so a lot of Norwegians think that he pushed it through because of that. I'm kind of bummed about it though, the two other main candidates were women fighting for human rights in Afghanistan and Colombia. One might say both of them has done far more than Obama, and at a much greater personal risk...
