Okay, so here in the US we have the American Cancer Society and throughout the year, mostly int the summer I believe, they have these huge fundraisers called Relay for Life. You participate on teams and it's an all night walk and at least one person from your team has to be walking at all times. It's a great fundraiser, and I'm going to participate in May. Do any other countries have this sort of thing? Or if you live in the US, have you done Relay for Life? You can go to my personal webpage by pasting this in the address bar (sorry, it wouldn't work as one long link so you have to copy and paste it...you have to copy each line individually and put the last one right after the first...let me know if I need to do this another way)

I personally have not done relay for life but they have it every year in my part of the united states. We have one at the city park and another one at the high school. It sounds like a fun event. All the high schoolers that participated set up tents inside the schools hallf to sleep in shifts and then walked till the early hours of the morning. They also had bands playing to make things lively.

It's great that you're doing it Kristie I don't think they have relay for life here, but we have walks and runs for other causes. I haven't done one before but I've always wanted to.

We have runs and stuff, too. For all kinds of causes I think, I always confuse them.

I don't think there are runs or dance marathons here. They raise money for good causes so they're very good things and seem also fun. I know some organizations (I'm sure about the italian association of volontary blood donors, -hope the translation is correct-) which usually do dinners,or lotteries to raise money and then give money to help certain hospital units (pediatrics, oncology,..).

All over the country we have Red Cross Blood Drives. There are bloodmobiles at the university every week for donations. I've never done it because I don't like needles, but it's nice when people volunteer to help out.

My dad works for the blood babk here so my house is full of blood bank promotional mugs etc. We have blood buses at our uni all the time too. I have to admit I've never given blood because I tend to get really dizzy even when they take the small amount of blood for a blood test, so if I was to give blood I'd have to do it on a day I had nothing else on, which is rare for me.

I'm scared to give blood, and I tend to get anemic so i'm not sure they would accept my blood.

Yeah I think I can't give blood because last time it was tested about 2 months ago there were glandular fever antibodies in it.

I'm not allowed to give blood because you have to weigh at least 110 pounds - otherwise I'd do it for sure, I'm not afraid of blood or needles, and it's such a simple way to help... but I can understand how it can be difficult for some people who don't like blood and needles.

I know, sometimes I think their requirements are too strict but then again, I understand how they would not want to take any chance considering all the problems they've had before with HIV-infected blood, and so on. One of my friends would very much like to give blood but she travels a lot so most of the time they won't accept her donation because she's spent some time in a country for which there is a restriction.
