DH Lawrence's Women in Love. I couldn't get what his point was, and the characters just seemed like a bunch of self-absorbed people with too much time on their hands. But I probably shouldn't judge, since I didn't even make it past half the book.
Another one's The Phantom of the Opera, which I read because of the musical hype. I'm surprised I even finished it, because the pacing was so bad, and characterisation was virtually non-existent. For once, I'll say, go for the stage adaptation, stay far, far away from the book.

Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe. I would have appreciated a few chapter divisions if only to keep my sanity. He kept on going on and on

I could barely get through The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. I know it was supposed to be satirical, and possibly I'll appreciate it more if I read it again in a few years, but I didn't feel that there was a deeper meaning behind all of the terrible language. And Tom Sawyer was one of the most obnoxious characters I've yet to meet -- he made the book at least 50 pages longer than it would have been otherwise. Ugh.

Yes, the ending is terrible and I hate Tom, too. But I love Jim. I think he's what makes the novel worth anything.

Sometimes a Great Notion by Ken Kesey. Nothing happens! That is, the first 150 pages make it seem like a pretty inteesting book, and then you're in for 480 pages of absolutely nothing. I now hate this book so much, that it might (however I will try not to let it) destroy my opinion of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest...

Being forced to read a book for school sometimes has such an effect. I haven't read Wuthering Heights yet.

Sometimes reading a hard book OUTSIDE of school is worse. I think if I had read some books, like Wuthering Heights, in school, I would have maybe appreciated it more.

Oh my gosh we had to read that last year and I found it extremely anticlimactic. I understand the whole idea behind reading books from different cultures and how this helps us, but I just didn't like how it was written. And the main character was not very likable.

Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe. I would have appreciated a few chapter divisions if only to keep my sanity. He kept on going on and on I agree with you on that! I never thought I'd actually see somebody say that they didn't like the book. I never got why there weren't chapters. It was always hard for me to find a good place to stop. I'd just have to stop at the top of a page if a new paragraph started there. I haven't even actually finished the book yet. It's just so boring in the beginning. At least that's my opinion.
