I've never read Chinese authors, but I've read some great books set in China. Would you like to know about good books set in China aside from books by Chinese authors?

Hi Pattinka, unfortunately I don't know any chinese authors, but I can recommend a japanese author to you: Haruki Murakami. One of my favourite authors of all time, if not THE favourite author of mine Just incredible books, particularly "The Wind-up Bird Chronicle". Absolutely great and just genius!

I read Jung Chang's Wild Swans, and I really enjoyed it. However, I can't say for sure if the author is Chinese or just writes about China...(kinda embarrasing:S)

I don't know many Chinese authors. Of course there's Dan Sijie (Balzac and the little Chinese Seamstress) and I guess Amy Tan (The Joy Luck Club, The Bonesetter's Daughter...) could qualify as a semi-Chinese author?

Amy Tan in great. I read the bonesetter's daughter. I'm pretty sure her books are mostly about being Chinese and American and trying to come to terms with her heritage. Half the bonesetter's daughter is set in China so it might be what you're looking for.

I haven't read many chinese authors or stories set in asia, but I really would like to. And thanks for the suggestion Pattinka, I'll check for book you mentioned. I've read Balzac and the little Chinese Seamstress by Dan Sijie and I think it's pretty good.

Well, this isn't by a Chinese woman, but I loved Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. Also, I liked Distant Land of my Father by Bo Caldwell. It's WWII in China...well, half is set in China, the other in California. It was interesting because I'd never read WWII from China's perspective before.
This isn't a book, but a Chinese movie I watched a few years ago called To Live or Huozhe. It's set 1940s-80s, which is the time of Mao rising to power. It's just a family living. I liked it, but it was hard to watch it, as it is in Chinese with subtitles and was for an English class. It's hard to read subtitles and write notes at the same time But I would recommend watching it.
