I haven't read it personally, but everyone I know who has read the da vinci code hasn't been that fussed on it. I'd like to read it now I've seen the movie though cos id like a bit more detail etc.

Good gravy did i have a giggle or two during that film.... Anyhoo, some lovely book to film adaptations in my mind have been:
Ang Lee's SAS (or "Sense and Sensibility") The BBC's PAP (or "Pride and Prejudice") Kevin Sullivan's Anne of GG Gillian Armstrong's (go the Aussies!) Little Women The Weiz brothers (who'd have ever guessed?!) with About A Boy PJ Hogan (go the Aussies once more) with Peter Pan (he interpretted in a very unique way, i feel and thematically it made a lot of sense to me) Pete Jackson, Fran Welsh and Phillipa Boyens (in this case you just have to reference the whole script-writing team) with LOTR

Except for About a Boy because I've never seen it so I obviously can't love it. But the ones you're talking about that I've actually read the book go really close to the books and I love that in movies.

They're definately the best of the best in terms of books to movies.

Thanks LG; I'm quite proud of the list, though watching Narnia last night i was lost as to how to rank that adaptation in terms of loyalty and creative liscence..... anyone? And they've FINALLY officially released the English version of the Perfume theatrical trailer: to be found at this site www.perfumemovie.com/

Oh I loved both the book and the movie. The movie was done extremely well. I don't know if I think the movie was better then the movie, but honestly it's pretty close.

I enjoyed both, but Ryan and Rachel's chemistry in the film just elevated it that little bit more and really had an impact.

I loved the HP books (well at least up to volume 4), but was quite disappointed with the films. It's only natural that the better movie is always inside your head if the book's well written. I loved "The Name of the Rose" both in book and movie form. It's one of the few Eco books that are actually fun to read.
I liked the LOTR films much better than the books. Dangit, I always get stuck with Tom Bombadil and can't manage to read on. I've tried reading them again and again.. no chance. I do like The Hobbit though.
Great film also- Awakenings (with Robert DeNiro and Robin Williams). I think I really had tears in my eyes all through the movie. The book is rather boring to read, since it's more or less just a case diary by Oliver Sacks.
Movies I hated.. well not really hate, but I was disappointed with The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The books are hilarious, the film is just blah. Same goes for Patrick Sueskind's "The Perfume". Hm, can't think of anything else at the moment.

I thought Jean Baptiste was too likeable and too good-looking in the movie. Also I didn't like that they altered the main focus of the story by adding an element of "love". At the end they put it as if he didn't want to live because he couldn't love.. that's not what the book says.. at least in my opinion. I think the book goes right under your skin.. the film didn't really touch me. It's hard to put the finger on the reason why. Possibly the book just left me with more impressions, more food for thought.

We´re mad dictators who use every thread for this discussion ;D I thought the guy who played Baptiste was wischi-waschi ( do you know this expression in Austria?), his face wasn´t one that I would recognize in the masses and I think that´s important on the screen.

Brit actor Ben Wishaw plays Baptiste - and he certainly is far better looking than i ever envisioned the character, but such is the film world. i can't comment on the film yet for we don't get it here til late December, and probably not even then..... but i've watched the trailer several times and it looks to me like a. Baptiste kisses a girl's hand passionately at some point - she may well be dead, but still - why would he do that?! and i'm sure it's a kiss, not a sniff (the latter of which would make much more sense) b. it seems as though they're portraying almost some kind of attraction (other than desiring her scent) of Batiste towards Laure...... can you guys perhaps PM me to give me some heads up regarding these concerns, so i'm prepared? I'd really appreictae it - i don't mind being spoiled if it's for my own good! The only saving grace that i know will make me happy either way is seeing Rachel as Laure; i'm absolutely convinced that this young actress has quite a future ahead of her... she'll snag an Oscar one day, mark my words! *trumpets sound as Neh makes prophecy*
