the movie cover thing doesn't really bother me, but having an oprah sticker on it would.

Really why? Most people look for the Oprah tag to actually sit down and read a book. Although i will agree that Oprah tends to bias her book selections. She always talks about how reading can give u new insight, but almost 75% of her book selections revolve around African-American Heritage!! Her last one is on Sidney Poitier, a black actor. I mean i want to learn about Hispanic or Asian Literature!

i just don't like it because people think your reading it because Oprah recommended it. Like, Night I read it years before and all of a sudden Oprah likes it so it's everywhere.

My brother girlfriend's grandmother only reads Oprah book selections, and I mean ONLY. I do agree that when Oprah makes a book selection it gives an old book new life.

Oh wow. LOL I just hate that it takes Oprah to suggest something to have the book recognized. People assume you want to read the book because she suggested it. I have read some great selections by her, but I don't read it because she suggested it.

I think that Oprah's book recommendations are good in that they get people to read, but I wouldn't want an Oprah sticker on one of my books (we don't have them here anyway but theoretically) basically because I don't want to be reminded of Oprah everytime I look at it! I feel it like isn't as good an edition and cheapens it a bit if it has one of those on it.

I watched an episode of Oprah a while back, and it was about her book club. There was a lady in the audience who spoke up that said she never read a book untill Oprah's book club. I mean, her first book was Anna Karenina for goodness sakes, that was quite an accomplishment. However, I tend to look for the books without the sticker because they tend to be cheaper because they don't have the fancy new cover that the publisher thought would be a good reason to hike up the prices when all the oprah enthuisiasts decided to buy it. (Go penguin books!- the absolute cheapest good quality books ever). Sorry to keep ranting on.

It's not just Oprah though.
The book publishers love a tie-in with a TV show or a movie as it boosts sales.
And yes, sadly, a movie poster will sell a book sometimes.
I think some people attack the movie poster books for good reasons, but all in all, I don't think a lot of integrity is lost. If a book is a good read and it comes in many formats then a wide range of people will read it.
For a long time, I grew up thinking that classics, black covered penguins, big libraries etc weren't places for me. I didn't think I belonged there. And for a lot of people, I think that is the case. Classics, in sombre covers frighten them. Does that make some of us scoff and say 'please'? Yes. It's still true.
If plonking a picture of colin flaming firth with a wet shirt on the front of Pride and Prejudice makes people read it then so what? I'm all for it.
I don't want to bang on about me, but it's an example to give - i grew up in a rough part of london, with very little money in the house and very few books. We watched telly, went to football and read tabloids in my neighbourhood. Through school, fantastic public libraries, an eager reading scheme, supportive family and some great teachers, i learned to love literature. At first, film adaptations, recommendations and reading lists at school got me started but now I'm happy in any bookstore or library and with most kinds of books.
Accessibility is so important to the future of publishing, libraries and reading. So if publishers slap on a few movie style covers and rebrand a few classics - so be it. The classics prints will still run and these books will continue to be revered.

I love the title of this thread. Book pushing. I thought it was originally going to be abut what books you try to push on your friends family to encourage them to read. Anywho the one thats all over here at the moment which I think is the same in the states is the fifity shades of gray trilogy. I havnt read the first one yet but its on my tbr pile. We dont have oprah's book club here but we used to have something called richard and judys book club, which had the stickers and believe me is worse. I agree completely about the bookcover thing for movies, I dont like buy the ones with the movie cover because then its instantly recognisable what you are reading and I dont like being a walking advert for the film, especially if the film puts the book to shame. What's worse is when the change the ending for the film. Like My Sisters Keeper, I think I cried when I came out the cinema after that one.
