I've noticed that at the moment EVERYWHERE is pushing The Memory Keeper's Daughter. It's in all the store catalogues, on all the display sections and has substantial advertisments in the major newspapers. It's really weird because it's not like it's just come out or something, it has been out for awhile now. I also noticed all this pushing has of course pushed it up to number 3 on our best sellers list.
Has anyone noticed any kind of similar book pushing crusade like this? On a book that isn't just being launched?

The Memory Keeper's Daughter is being pushed pretty heavily here too, I'm not sure why. You're right - it's very weird because it has been out for quite a while. I read in my publisher's weekly email that it was a huge part of Penguin's success last year, so perhaps they are trying to push further sales before it gets TOO "old." But that's just a wild guess.
I haven't really noticed it for anything else, but I'll keep looking.

Yeah you're right that's probably what they are doing. At least now that someone else has noticed it I know it's not just me imagining things!

I noticed it too, and I bought the book when it first came out so I was confused as to why it was everywhere in book stores so long after the book came out.

I'm actually currently reading "The Memory Keeper's Daughter" and although I like it, I'm not sure it deserves all this buzz. Maybe that's why they are pushing it, it can't sell itself because its and average-good book.

When we still had my bookstore, that particular book wasn't pushed that much, although it was there. I have realized though that certain books really do get a lot more attention than they probably deserve.

The Nanny Diaries are everywhere now, It's probably due to the movie. But it is being pushed around here.

Yeah, old books tend to get a new life when the movie comes out. I'm curious about that one, I did enjoy the novel...

I hate when they change the cover to match the movie...

I agree. I always try to find a cover that does not have a movie picture on it. I enjoyed Nanny Diaries, too. I hope the movie is good.

Oh, and then there's Oprah book choices. I hate buying a book that has her Oprah symbol on it.

I hate when they change the cover to match the movie... And me too! Makes me feel like I'm buying some kind of silly pop lit, even though it's actually a classic like Henry James's The Golden Bowl that had Uma Thurman on the cover...

Devil's Advocate - if it gets people who wouldn't normally read classic literature into reading it, where's the harm?

I agree with you guys on the movie cover deal. It really bugs me too, because I usually don't buy the book for the sole reason of having seen the movie. Usually I buy the book before I see the movie, even if it's been out for a while.
