I know that this isn't exactly what The Book Discussion forum is for but... I think that since most of us are students and reading for class no matter how tedious the work is and then writing a politically correct paper; which if you think about it makes up a large part of our existance. And that is probably why most Americans complain that time is moving too fast but really it is just our annoying English teachers stuffing works of literature that are huge(Dickens, Thackery) and then demanding us too write vague amounts of analysis on a specific topic which honestly all sound the same i mean, compare themes, compare diction, compare/contrast...which is obviously impairing us from such cliches like stopping to smell the roses and therefore permenantly causing us to become workaholics in that Huxley's Brave New World way, as well as our keen senses of smell. Therefore causing us to become workaholics with an inability to smell. And I thought well, what the hey! Writing is such a catharsis
Also because I am writing a paper comparing a theme (Dark side of human nature) in Langston Hughes's "doorknobs" to that of Jim Steven's "Schizophrenia" and i wanted to know what your opinions are on the poems and the fact that I'm bored out of my mind. Okay then, CHEERS!!

Yep this is basically my life. Writing English papers that is. This year I have to write a paper on five books with one common theme (or four books and a movie) and it must be 15 pages in length. Annd it's due in 26 days. Basically it is driving all the seniors crazy (hardly anyone but myself and a few others have started!). Have fun writing your paper! I find that I don't have trouble with the ideas it is just getting every page out that can be time consuming.

I´ve read doorknobs but nothing by Steven yet. Doorknobs is the one about the fear of life and the search for identity right? I hate these papers because I really have to struggle to fill so many pages since I usually get straight to the point. For my last paper I had to repeat myself which I hate but one professor told me it was okay to have one page less because the quality was good. I´m not great with quantity. 15 pages is really tough but it should be possible with 5 books. Good luck!

We have to write a 3-4 page thesis paper on every book we read. Currently it's Huckelberry Finn. This one is going to take FOREVER and be reallly long.

I wrote a paper for my English 112 class on the feminism in Elizabeth Bennet in P&P. My teacher really liked it because she's a grad student and is working on a thesis which is similar to that. She loves Austen That has to be about the only thing about her I like though My English literature teacher hated Jane Austen.

really why??? although my AP Lit teacher hates austen too. She says its too romantic and she is too idealistic. By the way she's big on horror movies and other outer realmsy stuff. it can get annoying because she makes these far fetched allusions about really random movies that no one has seen and expects us to know what the heck she is talking about

My teacher,a great fan of James Joyce and Virginia Woolf, was great(well..is, he's still teaching), his lessons were really very interesting, if I know something of english language and literature I have to thank him! But he simply hates Jane Austen, that's why we have study her very quickly and without reading anything at class. After my second year of high school I read Emma in english and I had to write a paper about it during summer holidays, it was the first time I read a book in english (I used to read simplified english editions for students before), it was also my first Jane Austen and I didn't understand it clearly...so I write on the paper that I haven't liked it and teacher said me that he was glad to hear I didn't like Emma, he thought Jane Austen was too romantic, silly and frivolous. Then I've read P&P, S&S, Northanger Abbey, Mansfield Park, Persuasion and re-read Emma (which I really enjoyed) and I think Jane Austen is absolutely great!I love her style!

Okay I'm back. Since as of yet School is sadly not over. And I have yet again a paper. Has anyone read the short story by Flannery O'Connor "Good Country People". Well if you have... Does anyone know a good poem/poet that might refer to either the theme(s) of: Feminism The Old South (aka think Faulkner "Emily Rose"-ish) The Country Deception Moral Decay/Corruption? ? It'll be great if i could find something and/or if you guys know a poem that could relate to one or more of the themes!!!
