I started Snow Flower and the Secret Fan this afternoon, I've just finished the chapter called "Footbinding" where the footbinding of the young girls in the family begins. I found it so shocking and disturbing that it brought tears to my eyes at one point. That people would actually do that to their daughters, shows how different cultures are. Especially when one in ten girls used to die from it. While it is quite confronting I'm still enjoying the book and learning about what China was like for women back in the 1800's. The secret women's language is interesting too.

I just finished this book then, and I absolutely loved it. I could hardly put it down the entire time I was reading it. It's definately one of my favourites It was interesting experiencing traditional China through Lilly's eyes and learning about their ways and practices, including nu shu and footbinding. But I enjoyed it most of all for it's exploration of the close relationships of women. I would reccomend it to everyone

i really love historical fiction and (although this is kind of out of the blue..) period films. Obviously they have to be told right, i hope to snag a copy somewhere, since my library as usual has it checked out. i hate that

I bought The Binding Chair by Kathryn Harrison a few months ago and still haven't read it. Is it anything like this book? Because I loved this book...

I haven't read either of these two novels, but I've got a feeling Harrison's might be more crude and violent...

Not yet, but I really want to. She's had a pretty screwed up childhood and had an "affair" (not sure this is the right word to use) with her father when she was a teenager. I think many of her books reflect the sordidness and violence of what she went through.
