HI! sorry I missed seeing this sooner. Life of Pi is hard to describe because if someone had told me the plot before hand, I might not have been interested in reading it. It's about a boy, Pi Patel, whose father owns a zoo in India. Pi is deeply interested in religion, in fact he actively practices three different organized religions at once! (This leads to some absolutely hilarious parts of the book.) The second half of the book is completely different. He is shipwrecked on a lifeboat with a live Bengal tiger. The rest of the book is about his survival story. What makes this book incredible is the writing and the character Pi. He is one of the most likable characters I have ever come across in literature. His voice is incredibly real and warm. The end of the book and the message conveyed through the story leaves you thinking about it for days. Everyone I know who has read this book has loved it. When I read the plot I wasn't very interested in reading Life Of Pi, but after reading what you wrote I'm becoming interested in reading it! It sounds like a good book and maybe I'll vote for it.

I was wondering when will the official results be in? So, people can try to pick up a copy to start the new discussion because we are almost finished F451. Maybe since there's a lot of interest in both Reading Lolita in Tehran and The Life of Pi and they're both currently even we should do both. Maybe we could do Reading Lolita in Tehran and then do the Life of Pi for the next contemporary book club book? Unless we suddenly get more voters...

I voted for Snow Flower And Secret Fan. It was really an hard choice because they all sound like very interesting books, so any other book of the list is fine with me!

Maybe we could do a contemporary two times in a row so we can do them one after the other so it's fair? and then do two classics to make up for it after that? Or do you guys want to do one of these and then a classic and then the other one?

I think doing both would be fine. It's kinda hard to choose between the two. We can choose a classic after.

reading 2 contemporary novels are fine by me, too. Do we have another poll to decide which book to read first or just pick whichever one? What do you guys think of an reading schedule for, let's say 3 or 4 books in advance and then have an approximate time frame for the discussion?

I think it sounds good in theory, but people tend to lose interest in the book they nominated in the past by the time we get to the next nomination poll. None of the last contemporary nominations were voted for in this poll as far as I can remember. I think people lose interest in some of the books because theyve gone out and read it or they think of some other book of lust.
I think I'd rather just do it the way we already do, except maybe open nominations for the next book as soon as the new one starts.

Is it worth setting up two threads? Yes i suppose if two sets of people commit to reading and discussing the respective books chosen...

I thought about that but everyone's back at uni and stuff now so we probably wouldn't get many people discussing in both.
