We have a tv screen at work displaying all the latest Reuters news and I saw this yesterday: "LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A woman who wrote an obscure vampire book as a teenager has sued "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer, accusing her of stealing ideas from the work for the fourth book in her vampire series, "Breaking Dawn." Here's two links if you want to read more: www.reuters.com/article/entertainmentNews/idUSTRE57J5PN20090820www.reuters.com/article/mediaNews/idUSN2052146520090820 I kind of want to read Jordan Scott's "The Nocturne" just to see how different / similar the books are. But then again, as it said on the news that this could just be a "publicity stunt to further Ms. Scott's career" then maybe not... Has anyone read / interested in reading it?

It does sound like a publicity stunt to me...

It looks like a publicity stunt to me. I mean: why sueing her now? Because Meyer is on the top of her career (or at least doing really good). And I think it is really strange that her book might even be a little similar to Jordan Scott's, because Meyer's is part of a bookserie with characters who are mentioned earlier. So if it does have a little comparison, then it must have been with the other books too, and that makes it even more weird that she didn't sue Meyer earlier. And, really, if you look from Jordan Scott's point, it's all working out for her: she might win the case and get credit for her work in Meyer's book and a lot of money, or she might lose the case and get a lot of publication, not only for her name, but also for the re-print of her book. Looks like a win-win situation to me!

That's what I didn`t understand, too. Obviously it's not only about the characters but also about certain scenes that are similar. But still, it's part of a series, the characters and the story developed throughout the books. And there are so many vampire novels with maybe a similar storyline that are just not as popular. To me, it looks like someone's trying to profit from the success of Meyer's books. I mean, reading about the other book made me a bit curious about how similar the stories really are and mv also mentioned something like that, so in some way it's working.

Hmm... I think ity might be for publicity because in the article it says: For instance, the lawsuit said both books contain a wedding passage and an after-wedding scene of sex on the beach.Like that has never been written before? On the other hand, when I read the first Sookie Stackhouse book, there were so many similarities to the twilight book, that I couldn't help but wonder if Stephenie Meyer had read the book. So maybe she had read Nocturne it and felt inspired?

^Cleverly Stephenie Meyer claims that the idea for "Twilight" came to her in a dream... LOL
But I think this is a publicity stunt. The author knows that people will go out and read her novel "just to see" if there are any similarities to Twilight. And then she'll make money... But I do wonder if it's any good...

I read an interview with Stephanie Meyer where she was asked how other vampire stories affect Twilight and she says that she never read or watched anything else so it was all her.
Also, isn't there a theory that there are only 7 stories in the world and everything is just a variation on one of them?
