Lots to discuss... - Do you like the Bridget Jones Series? - Do you also like the movies? - Are you pleased or annoyed at how different the movies are to the books? - Have you been reading Bridget Jones #3 online at Friends of Firth? - What do you think of the whole Bridget Jones series?

I've seen only the movies, I really liked the first and I pretty enjoy the second one but not as much as the first. I haven't read the books but I'm very interested on opinons about them. A friend of mine told me they're good books, but I didn't listen that suggestion because I don't trust her reading tastes!

They are, in most people's opinions, about a million times better than the films. Make sure you get the UK editions (as I hear the US editions have some amendments to them) I found that I liked the first book and lot and loved the second one. And in relation to the films, the first movie is 80% like the book and the second one about 50% like the book which is a real shame. Give them a try and see what you think, I doubt you will be disappointed.

I've been wanting to read them, but well, so many books so little time. lol Imagine a modernisation of Pride and Prejudice and you're halfway there - then throw in some wry commentary on the life of the modern single woman, the comic 'parent induced embarrassment' interludes and a lot of sharply witty writing in the form of a diary and you have BJD.

I liked both the first book, and I absolutely loved the first movie. But I was pretty dissapointed with the second movie, and didn't think the second book was as good.

I'm with Dom on that, very much so. Fan of the first in both mediums, not so for the second intallments, though i prefered the 2nd book far more than the 2nd film, which just made me look on the first one with sadness that it had to be continued when it was strong on it's own. I know with Helen having written the sequal, it was always going to be filmed if the first was, but still - i felt it could have been executed better, and Renee's performance was more grating and her actions just silly, whereas i felt in BJ I she was simply endearingly clumsy and had her own intetelligence and unique world-view.

I´ve only seen the first film, which was okay. I´ll try the books. Probably best on vacation.

I enjoyed the 2nd book more than the first, I don't know why but I did! Then, I saw the 2nd film. On its own its ok, but in light of what it could have been (ie if they're actually followed the second book rather than brushing lightly against it for about ten minutes) then the movie seems terrible! I got the impression from Renee's performances that her heart wasn't in it? The Edge of Reason Movie - tut tut. Where was the real Rebecca? Sinjun? The weird builder? The children's party? The mushroom party on the beach? All those self help book references? The ringing bin? Mod: and the bit with the boy and the bunny? Heaven knows what the third film will be like (sigh)

I saw half of the first movie and I stop watching because I got really bored with it but I would like to read the books, they sound fun.

They're making a third movie?! Based on what? Oh well, like you said, the 2nd movie was only slightly based on the second novel so... I'm a big fan of the two Bridget Jones novels, I love the modern twist on Jane Austen! I thought the second book followed the plot of "Persuasion" even more closely than the first book followed that of "Pride and Prejudice", and I also like the way it's written. The diary entries reminded me of all the epistolary novels I had read before, but again, with a cool modern twist I did like the movies - I thought the first one was very well done, you can see how they tried to make it look even more like Pride and Prejudice. I was disappointed in the second one at first because it had so little to do with the novel. When I watched it again last year, it kind of grew on me, but like you said gilmoreren, you have to not think of it in light of the novel. I'd never heard about that third Bridget Jones, is it still written by Helen Fielding? By the way, ever noticed the similarity (as fire as titles go) between Helen Fielding's Bridget Jones and Henry Fielding's Tom Jones?!

I imagine the third movie will be made after the third novel, which is being serialised at the moment - see the friends of firth link I gave for more info. I actually hadn't thought about persuasion and the edge of reason - perhaps I will reread and compare them The diary entries are part of the charm of the books - I think the way this leads the reader into bridget's mind is a strong reason why the books will always be thought of more fondly than the films The second movie is funny - its just not as great as it could have been. If only they'd based it more on the book! Tom Jones - Bridget Jones funny
