How I saw/read Pride and Prejudice was this: about 5 years ago I read Pride and Prejudice, and as I read I watched the BBC version. (reading about a 1/6, watching up until where I was in the book, then going back to the book.) Sort of an odd way to do it, but I really loved it.
I loved the BBC version, I loved how closely it followed the book and how detailed it was. I am a big Colin Firth fan anyway, and thought he was a great Mr. Darcy. Elizabeth was very charming and great.
Then, I saw the 2005 version and fell in love with it. I view it as a beautiful adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. I think it's beautiful and fun. I was surprised with how good Keira was, and I loved that in this version Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy have way more chemistry. It was so fun to watch. I also liked that in the new one, Jane was actually beautiful, and you could see why people thought she was the beautiful one. It always bothered me in the BBC version that Jane was sort of blah looking, she's not supposed to be.
So I really love both versions, and have watched and will continue to watch both versions often. But I think I like the 2005 version a bit better.

I agree that the BBC Jane looked somewhat of a horse. But I still love the BBC more

I voted for the 2005 one, but only because I haven't seen the A&E one. It seems like almost everyone on here thinks it's better though.

It will be interesting to see how you like it, having watched the newer one first. As for me, I happen to like them both equally because they do different things with the novel and I like the interpretations. It did take the third watching of it for me to rate them equally but now I defend Keira and her Oscar nomination - the sheer bravery of touching a role so well done in the past is enough reason to admire her!

Oh no, this discussion again The A&E version was okay but I love the new movie and everything about it except the alternate ending which was so cheesy! The alternate ending with the 'Mrs Darcy' thing? That wasn't shown in UK cinemas!

I've watched the 1940 version of P&P, the newest ones and the A&E miniserie...I can compare them now! My favourite is the A&E version but I enjoyed the oldest ones too. I really liked Greer Garson in Elizabeth's role, she's great, and Colin Firth is my favourite Mr. Darcy. I don't like the newest version of P&P, I think it was pretty weird and I absolutely agree with Jefie: For me the A&E miniseries is the best one by far. I was really disappointed in the new movie with Keira Knightley - in fact, since the other version was so well done, I still can't understand why they even bothered trying to make a new one. Everything felt wrong: the clothes didn't match the period, the dialogs were rushed, we barely even see Wickham, Darcy was too shy, they tried too hard to justify the mother's behavior and the scene at the end where Elizabeth goes scampering about the country in the middle of the night just made me laugh. They sort of accidently meet at dawn. It made me laugh because there's no way a young lady back then, even a free spirit such as Elizabeth, would go scampering about the country on her own wearing nothing but a dressing gown!!! If the "real" Darcy had seen her do something like this, he would have run away as fast as his 10,000 pounds a year would allow him lol I can't stop laughing at the end of that movie.

I just watched the 1940 adaptation with Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier. I had to say that I did like it, but it didn't follow the book very well. There was a lot that was changed/left out. I mean, Elizabeth never even went to Pemberly and isn't that where she supposedly realizes she loves Darcy? Anyways, I did like it anyways, just had to keep remembering not to compare it to anything.

I agree, the newest was good and really nice, but I think it wasn´t very authentic. It was a simple Hollywood production, aiming at the audience. as example Jane was so beautiful, but the Jane in the BBC is just more the beauty idol of the Jane Austen time. and I confess I just hated Keira Knightly as Elisabeth, she just didn´t fit in my opinion! So my vote goes to Colin Firth!

Yay, another vote for Colin Firth's Mr Darcy! ;D
Last week, I was talking about P&P with a woman who often comes at the library where I work and we both agreed that Colin Firth is the best Mr Darcy, after the original ;D . I even ended up closing the library 15 minutes later because we were busy discussing Jane Austen and our favourite adaptions.
