Has anybody seen this yet? www.quirkbooks.com/Book.aspx?BID=214I just saw an ad for it in the latest Mental Floss magazine. It looks like a really cute book. I want to find it in a bookstore so I can see what it's like. I did look at the Amazon "search inside" feature for it, it looks cute. There's funny sections like "how to marry off your daughter."

Might be an interesting read, but I'm sure it would bring back frightening memories of the Jane Austen Society meeting I went to

The conferences were great, but it's just scary how much they get into the whole Jane Austen era thing - they wear the dresses, know how to dance a cotillon, and there were cries of horror when Anne kissed Captain Wentworth in the movie Persuasion!

Are you serious!!! That is so funny. I've heard of crazy psychotic Harry Potter fans but not err.... i guess i would call them Austenites, running around wild, in the streets of Quebec, especially because that was over 200 years ago!!

Really?? wow..that's so scaring! They would probably be horrified by the movie Emma as well.

Yeah, it's a weird mix of people at those AGM because on the one hand, you've got great scholars who come in to talk about new theories and approaches to Austen's novels, and on the other hand you've got the crazy Austenites who have read the novels over and over again and who have very fixed opinions on who Jane Austen was and what her books were about. Still an interesting experience, though!

By the way, for those of you who live in the US and Canada, here's the Website of the Jane Austen Society of North America: www.jasna.org . It only costs about $20 to become a member if you're a student and you get a newsletter filled with great Austen-related information and once a year you receive a collection of essay called "Persuasion". There are also regional group meetings in several cities in the US and Canada. I've been a member for quite a few years now, it's great if you love Jane Austen's novels!

What I love most about it is the Balls. There is just nothing like them anymore. They were such fun social occasions for people of all ages, and the dancing! It's a shame that formal, beautiful dancing is nearly extinct.

It's a shame that formal, beautiful dancing is nearly extinct. I totally agree! And all the games of flirting and matching, exciting scandals I looooove it.
